I just registered our team. So 4 teams. BAD Polo are yet to register, so 5. With your team Dale, it would be 6. I can think of at least 3 other teams that want to play in a leauge. I'd say it's looking good!

Hey - is the ball poll (on the blog) an official rule deducing mechanism? 'cause I think it shouldn't be if it is.

If people do want to change the ball I think the best way would be to spend a Sunday with both types of balls and make a decision that way.

Wait a cotton-pickin' minute...

is this affiliated with londonbikepolo, or is this a breakaway group?

Are we about to see gangs of londonbikepololeague players roaming the streets of london, armed with chainwhips looking for fights with stray londonbikepolo players who've got lost on their way home from south polo?

Will the subsequent gang wars on the streets of London lead to a fracture in the forum, and subsequently to the downfall of society as we know it? Is this mad max in the making, without the mullets*?

(*except west london)

Where will this all end?

Does anyone have any idea when this league will kick off?

Seb, assuming this is in your hands, are you just awaiting enough teams joining, and if so how many is enough?

I guess the real question is ... how long do i have to find a new team (now that the other bicyclestars have deserted me*)?

Can I register my team and change players after a couple of weeks? I'm sure there should be a transfer window; finding the right constellation isn't easy.

OK firstly, well done to Seb for starting the ball rolling on this. Great idea.

But we need to get a move on. The longer it takes to set this up, the more people are going to start losing interest or dropping out.

Even if it's not perfect at the beginning, we can always change things or adjust them as we go along. There have been lot's of good ideas, we need to just pick one (or a few) and go with them and start playing.

I think we should get 1 representative from each team that is registered to come to a meeting, this week, where the rules for the 1st season are decided. This gives people input, but limits the input to the people that are actually playing, and limits it to a workable number of people. We make the 1st season quite short (3 months) then do the same process for the 2nd season, changing any rules that didn't work. After a couple of seasons played, then we can start putting together formal/permanent rules.

I reckon we meet this week, say Thursday night somewhere central and get this going. The teams can discuss amongst themselves who goes and what rules they want to vote for.

Sorry if you behind the scenes people are already on this, but I'm quite keen to see this started.

I agree with all of that.
I also really really do not want anything 'behind the scenes' The LBPL blog could easily be a way to keep people up to date. We should have a handful of people (the ones delegated to meet up thursday?) who can make and edit the posts. www.madbikepolo.org is a good example.

What all this crazy talk about rules and stuff we have had rules for the last year and everyone who plays knows there dose not need to be a meting about rules there is no need to chang them or add any more in just because we are playing a "league" let just get on and play and got over this whole bureaucracy rubbish.

We are not meeting to discuss polo rules, but just to set in place how the league is going to run. How many games a month, how many points for a win, length of season etc. And I agree that we need to keep it simple and fairly informal without loads of beurocracy, but we do just need to sort out these basic details. Let's get to it.

Surely if we sort out the concept of how to work it people will join up. Let's just organise a schedule and get some games going.

People will likely buy in to the idea more easily once it's already up and running and they feel left out?

put em on paper, can't be any bitching.

RULES

-Two teams of three players.

-Any type of bicycle is allowed. Handlebars MUST be plugged.

- Mallets must resemble a croquet mallet with a wide side and a round end. Modified ski poles and plastic pipe are the most common materials. The handle end of the mallet MUST be plugged.

-The ball will be a street hockey ball.

- Goals will be a pair of orange cones spaced one bike length apart.

-If a goal cone is disrupted it is the responsibility of the player who disrupted it to fix it.

-Start of a game: Each team will be stopped behind its own goal line and the ball will be positioned at center court. Play will begin with a “3 2 1 GO!” from the sideline.

-Players may not play the ball with their feet at any time.

-Scoring a goal must be made from what started as a hit. A hit is made from the end of a player’s mallet. A “shuffle” does not count as a goal; if the ball is shuffled through the goal, play continues uninterrupted.

-After a goal is scored, the team who scored returns to their half of the court. The team who was scored on takes possession of the ball.

-Call out the score after each goal.

-Passing “backward” through the goal (from behind the goal line to in front of it, through the goal, a.k.a. “goal offsides”): When the ball is passed through the goal in this way, a goal CANNOT be scored by the first player to play the ball. Any subsequent player to play the ball may score. If a ball is shot from in front of the goal line and does not go through the goal but bounces off the back wall and comes out through the goal, the ball is in play and can be scored. A ball that crosses a goal line backwards must be “hit” before it can score.

-Players must not touch the ground, or “foot-down”. Each time a player goes foot-down, that player is out of play and may not play the ball until they ride to the side line at center court and ring the bell. Then they may return to play. Only one side of the court has a bell, not both.

-Contact rules: “Like” contact is allowed. Player to player (body to body), except grabbing or pushing with hands. Mallet to mallet (generally, hitting another player’s mallet is poor etiquette if that player is not attempting to play the ball or in front of the goal, playing goalie). Bike to bike.

-Everything else is NOT allowed: Mallet to player, player to bike, mallet to bike, etc.

-Throwing of mallets is not allowed at any time, in any situation.

- The games are played to 5 points.

- The Games are timed to 10 Minutes

-Trash talking is allowed.

needs to be said that once a player is foot down they should not interfere with play or other players.
