2012-08-03 - Rider down, Shoreditch High St/A1202 9:10am

Time : Approx 9:10 to 9:15am Friday 3rd August 2012.

Location : (http://goo.gl/maps/xnuGg) Junction of A10 and A1202 heading southbound on Shoreditch High St.

Lights were red and I was waiting in the left hand side of the green advance stop box. Fellow cyclist approaches on my right hand side and exclaims to white van driver behind me, who is now encroaching on the cyclists area, “Oh, am I in your way? This is the cyclists waiting area”, as the van driver was pulling forward into the advance stop box.

The cyclist then manoeuvres into a central view in front of the van and driver so as to put himself in clear view whilst we wait for the green light, at the same time calling to the van driver "I'm in your way now!". I look back to the traffic lights and seconds later when I see the green signal I begin to pull away. One or two more seconds later and I hear the sound of the guys bike being crushed under the wheels of a vehicle, so I brake hard and pull to one side of the road, looking back to see the bicycle under the wheels of the van.

As I remember it, the van drivers explanation as he got out of his vehicle was "It was a green light and you were in my way!".

I'm glad to see that miraculously the cyclist wasn’t physically harmed, though he was clearly very shaken and upset at both the attempt on his life and that his bike had been wrecked. As a member of the police had just arrived on the scene, I gave my phone number to the cyclist and continued my journey.

Update: Police just called me and asked if I'm willing to give a statement, which I defo am.
I was too shocked to take the vehicle reg and couldn't see any identifying logos from my position in front of the van, fortunately the police were on the scene very quickly and the van driver didn't attempt to leave.

File a report with the police so you can get a crime reference number: At least it'll be on the system.

This fuckwit needs to be put away. It won't happen but please give evidence so the cyclist gets some justice. I was joking about white van drivers this morning maybe changing their attitude a little. Clearly not.

Ridiculous. Just what goes through someone's mind to make them think this is a good idea? Glad the victim wasn't physically harmed but damage has been done, they will be feeling a lot less secure on the road as a result of this.

This sounds truly horrid and could happen to any of us. Let us, however, keep the comments moderate. This is an open forum and what is said here could be used in court.

What is more unbelievable is that nothing will happen to the wanker.

Yeah, but he's got to get the police statement made soon so that a lawyer cannot argue that his interpretation of the events hasn't been affected by active debate on this web site.

Correct, one witness but there will inevitably be many other people with personal opinions (Myself included) but this really isn't the place to voice them. if this ever reaches a court room, we do not want to negatively effect the outcome.

Great work. When witnessing an incident such as this, it is a very good idea to write everything that you recall down immediately and email it from a place whose time recording will serve as evidence of the immediacy of the transcription. It is sometimes a good idea to email it immediately to the police.

Glad rider escaped unharmed & glad he had a high level of self control after the incident.

There are at best willfully/criminally negligent/stupid people out there - please everyone ride safe as you can - if there's a nutter out there/behind, get off and take down details - this could have been too horrible for words.

+1 definitely write it down now with a sketch, include time, date & road positions - often easier to dictate this - most modern phones have this facility.

Just gave my witness statement at Shoreditch Police Station, two things I wish I'd remembered better or recorded at the time (though probably not so important in this particular case) are :
- Description of what people were wearing and carrying.
- Any passengers in the vehicles involved.
A photo would have done the job for both of these, wish I had the presence of mind to take one!

I hear the driver of the van was arrested for dangerous driving and actual bodily harm.

The rider down threads are for reporting of fact.
The are not here to allow posting of personal opinion, conjecture and/or apportionment of blame.

As has already been said;

Smart thinking. If you do get called to court, it might be worth letting some cycling blogs/local newspapers etc aware of the case, where it's being held and when.
