polo bikes restoration

Hi lads and ladys

We too had to restore all the old polo bike in the last year or two over twenty bikes so if you have any questions give us a shout.
you will need 12 geag spokes moter bike chains etc head sets bottom brackits we have them.
good to see you are not selling them as they are very rear bikes and i see you have the old le-gall mallets bamboo heads best mallet to use for dribbling but shite in the winter as they get very water loged.
All so there is the worlds larest polo tournament in aprail 2009 in dublin all grass so if you wish too play get your team ready.

any chance any of you want to play in the euro cup next year

We will be returning the polo bikes to Herne Hill this week, we'd like to invite any Rollapaluza CC members, polo enthusiasts, people who've shown an interest in this thread, to come down and check them out, and make an audit of what needs doing to them....

We do not want new parts or cash donations! as we intend to apply for proper funding at a later stage to fully refurbish them, what we want to do now is get as many functional as possible...

If you have:

old MTB front wheels, mtb tyres, tubes, saddles, flat pedals, these could all come in handy though...think very little is standard on these bikes, so we'll be taking measurements too...

This Saturday 18th October!

Hope to see Dogs, Trampsparadise, eggpie, Lebowski, lecar and all those on this thread who've shown support....thanks.

10 am ish at the track, we will be at the old workshop under the old seating as you arrive

Yup, a few of us turned up as Waspar were collectively clearing out their new workshop and storage space. I've got some photos of the bikes and the work we did on Saturday. I'll post 'em up later in the week when I get to a computer I can hook my camera up to.

Do they have a wheelbase that short, adjustable seat post or 1:1 gearing too?

seriously, if hard court polo sticks aound the evolution of the "new polo" bikes will bring them closer to these...if not all the way....is that evolution?

Right, I took some photos of the grass polo bikes at Herne Hill on Saturday. Winston and Caspar have got about ten bikes in total, five of them the Allins in the photos above and the others with similar frames / geometry and wheelbase etc, but all a bit of a hotch potch.

The bikes clearly haven’t been used for a while:

But, we’ve gone through each bike checking what working, what can be fixed
easily, and what needs replacing to get them rideable again

Action Winston Photo:

And eventually after a bit of shouting, swearing and fixing of inner tubes, we came out with two fully working bikes and a list of things we need to get the others working.

and that’s where you lot come in… basically, I’m on the scrounge for

26" tubes
cloth rim tape
front mtb wheels
front mtb tyres (not too fat)
plastic pedals
saddles

None of which need to be in super condition, but in working condition at least. So if I could ask you to hunt through your spares box and kindly donate that any stuff that’s been sat there for ages just waiting for a purpose that’d be great... PM me and I can arrange a time to come and pick it up.

Long term, we want to get some cash raised to get the frames repainted and get better parts on ‘em, rebuild some new back wheels. But short term, getting 2 teams of grass polo bikes up and running is the first goal.

And look, they’re so much fun to ride, they come with their own background Benny Hill music, even RPM was turning into a hipster – check out the grin

I'm fairly sure he had a polo mallet in is had at one point too.

Those bikes are such wicked fun, even with the laurel and hardy back wheel that was going on on the one I tried.

No parts as such, but I have plenty tools, grease and a bit of know how, so will help out with pleasure.

Gaffer tape works fine as make do rim tape provided you keep pressures down, 80psi range.

Tempted to buy an archie wilkison after trying these out.

Today, changed a few saddles, gaffer-taped some rims, changed some tubes....and we now have three (sort of working) bikes....

"The famous" Jason C helped me out a bit and we had a bit of a knock-around in the car park...

Ahem..that funny little bike shop as you call it is actually a wicked little bike shop, main man there fixed an old unicycle I was lucky enough to pick up for free but which was unipedal at the time..he found an old crank behind the counter, welded it on, stuck the pedal on, and demonstrated how to ride it..so please don't slag them off..they'd probably even give you bits or help for the bike polo cause for free if you spoke to them nicely ;-]
