Just spotted this thread, does anyone know the legalities of those stopping areas by junctions?

Wait ahead at lights
Wait in front of other vehicles when you're at traffic lights. The green painted box with a white cycle symbol shows you where to wait and help you move ahead of other vehicles

Are cars, motorbikes, lorries, buses, cabs, animals, small children etc etc aloud to wait inside them at the lights? or is is just another road marking thats at the disgression of the motorist?
