Look at Lithium Ion rechargeable batteries, they are not small but they are very light which will be your main concern. The invertor can be made so it doesn't whine. do you have a link to the EL sheet you used and the specs for powering it?

The inverter set up as it is at the moment is only 109g with batteries so pretty light really.

I have no clue !!! I have a few bits of EL sheet from all over the place, most of it is fairly old - the one I do know the provenance of is the stuff I got from http://www.mutr.co.uk/ which to be honest is not very bright and the electrical connections are weird - so look around but don't get it from there (but I mutr.co.uk do cheap inverters for you to pull apart and make small bike sized ones) - also don't get it from http://www.rapidonline.com as they use the same stuff as mutr.co.uk (but if you want to experiment are very very cheap).

I know surelight sell the good stuff but they are very expensive.

Sorry that's the best I can remember, search around it is not too hard to find.

For power - 9V (4x AA or AAA batteries) of inverted power.

This is the slippery slope to MAX POWER-ville, I agree. You're all looking down that slope, watching tynan already sliding inexorably towards getting a PS3 on his bike or boilerplate-effect steel bits or something.

But I am so glad you chose to try out this luciferan madness on such an appropriately-named frame. You could tell people that it uses argon gas and everything.

Do you want to be my friend ?

Rapid are already dirt cheap so with a discount they should be 'very dirt cheap'*

When we learned a bit about semi-condictuors one of the points we learned about was "hole scavengers". As you can imagine that got a few laughs.

Don't bother with the patent just come up with a fancy ad package & sell it!
Look at how well the T'shirts sold! Give it 4-5 months and you could sell those T'shirts for twice the price to all the fashionable chaps who have seen them around.

Same rules apply here!

You could extend to clothes... A Cameo style cod piece would be one for the night ride?

Pm me with what you want and we can discuss. I'm thinking a red strip up the seat tube for a rear light, build my own invertor to run off a LiPo rechargeable battery which could drop in the seat tube and weigh considerably less than what you have, or a none contact dynamo type system driven off the rear wheel (intensity will vary with speed quite a bit though).

EL can't generate red (only blue/green/white as far as I know, I don't know the technical limitations or reasons) - but you can obviously run white and gel it red (or any colour you want).

If you pull this off let me know as I am a bit crap at all that kind of carry on, I usually find something close and backward engineer it to what I want, I don't think I have enough brainage to work with Li-Po (!!!! do you mean Li-ion??).

Yep I meant Li-Ion not polymer. something like a pair of 18650 cells would give 7.2V and plenty of capacity to power a small sheet for ages for about 90g, you just need an invertor to run off that voltage, or one to run of 3.6v and you could get the whole setup for under 100g and not have to worry about balancing cells for recharging.

I reckon I can, but like I say I would just be taking apart an inverter and reassembling it with a bit of chopping and soldering.

Fuck me upside down with a pair of giant English cocks ! That's great stuff, I have never seen it as a tape, I imagine it is the same stuff but in a strip and an adhesive backing - that would have been ideal for my original plan which was to the make a EL rim - with the inverter zipped tied to the hub (rotational mass and all that).

Cheers for the link.

Whoa there big head! Tis true...it is just someone else's product wrapped around a seatpost, but it's a good idea nonetheless. When you spend top dorrah on lovely frames the last thing you want to do is clutter it up with lights with shabby brackets. Although it's not the simplest of setups (I mean by installation) it looks clean. And that's the main thing, no??

It has got me + my chemist friends thinking. I think the next step is full on chemiluminescence....
Or GFP maybe.
Basically, EL is one thing, but I think we can do away with the wires.....

Yeah !! The reason I want to shove the the power/inverter down the seat tube it to get it out of the way, keep it simple/clean.
