They were actually very lucky that it was me driving and not one of the many wankers who drive around the forest with general disregard to cyclist. I put it down to plain old group mentality on their part...
You haven't answered my question. Twisty forest road sounds like something that would be single lane, in which case there isn't a wrong side of the road.

I didn't need to answer, it is not a single lane road and there is a wrong side of the road. The roads do not have white lines anywhere in the forest, irrespective of width.
The road in particular is easily over two cars wide and passing cars in opposite direction doesn't even require a reduction in speed.

No use trying to defend the cyclists on this one I'm afraid. They were clearly in the wrong, made worse by their gestures and not helping other drivers attitudes to cyclists (which as said before is pretty shit to start with!)

I gave a little toot on horn to make a point and the riders towards the back decided to flick the Vs at me as though I had done something wrong. Am I wrong in expecting them to have actually made a sorry/thanks gesture for not actually running half the group over!

^ this.

If not, then it shouldn't be a surprise that you might have to stop.

[edit] ok, answered in the above post... it was a wide road. The club riders are being dicks. [edit]

Saw your edit, yes they were being dicks. Starting to think Hippy was in the group as he seems to be on the defensive...

You did need to answer. I've been on skinny lanes where riding two-abreast would take the whole "road". Oncoming cars generally pull into the passing areas to let us through in single file. Now and then they don't, of course.

WTF are you on?

You're the one who was ignoring the question.

I haven't ridden with a bunch for months as all my training and riding was for solo 12 and 24hr races.

The bunch I would ride with are very considerate cyclists.

What would it matter? It's still a narrower 'thing' than a car.

Even a solo rider might use either side of the road, depending on just how deep the potholes are and what shit is strewn over it.

As said this is not a skinny lane, this is a normal width road. Okay I knew that and you didn't but if the road was single lane I wouldn't have raised it as an issue as there is not often a right of way on a single lane road and I would expect to stop for cars, bike, pedestrians etc,.

The road in question is nothing like that, it is like a motorway compared to that. More like the road andyp has picture but with a few bends in it.

The road you have pictured is the width where one of the wanker drivers I referred to would think nothing of passing me just before that bend.

I think hippy made a good point – that the case is not clear cut unless you consider the road.

I ride 2up down roads very much like that shittylane.jpg all the time. It's no worse than single file.

How am I to know what the road looked like? You said "fairly twisty forest road" which to me sounds like a narrow lane. I've not seen many dual carriage ways called twisty forest roads.

Okay, yes I suppose many peoples image of a twisty forest road may be a narrow lane. There are twisty forest road all over the forest and a high proportion of them are two lanes wide.

So to be clear - it was a two lane road with a couple of 35 degree bends in it.

bit late to the party, but in the Highway code excerpt
"You MUST NOT use your horn",
"except when another road user poses a danger" refers only to the previous two proscriptions:
"while stationary on the road" and
"when driving in a built-up area between the hours of 11.30 pm and 7.00 am"

It does not ban you from using your horn whilst moving, and outside of those hours, for the purpose of "letting other road users know you are there".
