A tip to help recover stolen bikes... but you must do this before it gets stolen.

Next time you overhaul/service your bike make lots of small bits of paper and write on them:
Quote:
This bike belongs to YOUR NAME, if anyone else has brought it into your shop it is stolen. Please call YOUR MOBILE NUMBER in that event.
Use clear sellotape on the slips of paper to waterproof the messages.

Then put the paper:
  • Rolled up inside the stem.
  • Rolled up inside the handlebars, both sides before you put the plugs on.
  • Underneath the bar tape.
  • Underneath the rim tape (write on the rim tape with marker pen so that it's obvious the message is underneath).
  • Anywhere else it could fit on your bike and not be reach unless it was being service, and in that event be obvious.
A hell of a lot of bikes end up passing through the hands of an Evans mechanics, and doing this is one little thing that will increase the chance of you getting your bike back.

I've always laminated them, and stuck it in the seat tube and, if you've an old style BB you can usually get one in there (never tried it with a sealed unit)

You could always use the message "if you haven't been told to expect this, this bike is stolen, please call the police, then call 'my #' "
Just remember to tell any shops you take it into

Good idea, i'll do that since I'm changing a lot of stuff over on my bike at the moment.

Getting it marked by the police is always a good idea, too.

So long as they use those little dots and don't want to start hammering my post code into the BB shell.

I think spoke cards can be a good deterrent too:

This bike is fitted with an anti-theft device.

If you steal this bike you will be fucked up the arse with a razorblade encrusted dildo.
Christ, I should've stopped posting whilst I was actually being helpful.

Nice one: I have a sticker on my razorblade encrusted dildo, threatening to fuck anyone who steals it in the ass with my bike.

I never thought about reversing the idea.

yeah, i'd never get the stamped stuff done. i've wondered what would happen as well if you sell the bike - you wouldn't be able to get it 'unstamped' unless you filed it out.

i'm off to make little labels to hide in my bike..

fk, you've rumbled me! I myself am a keen bike theif, I was trying to make people disregard the idea in the OP, so as to save myself the hassle of removing the bits of paper from every bike I steal.

Well if everyone did this, I'd have to employ 2 or 3 people just to remove all the bits of paper. I'm not made of money.

Paper? Can't we get some sheets of carbon fibre to write on? I don't think that paper is laterally stiff.
