Bike polo in Cardiff

Anyone here from Cardiff and fancies playing some polo? I've never played, but have a bike and am just getting some mallets together (when I find some piping), have no venue as yet, but it's early days!
I've asked a few mates who are keen so if anyone else fancies a bash lets hear.

Cheers

There's a really big fixie scene in Cardiff, I think they may be as many as twelve people or so and that's not even counting the old roadies and some of the couriers! Cambridge Sam in Newport - watch this space for developments.

Cheers

Make that 13 - I've just moved to Cardiff and was looking for that "scene" :)

Where are you based Martin123? I'm up by Roath Park and was looking to see if I could find some local riders

Hi monkeywhippet and Cambridge Sam

It's amazing, for years I've been riding round seeing this yellow tubing stuff by the side of the road but when I actually need some it all disappears! Some progress though, should have some yellow tubing for mallet heads v. soon (thanks Liam) and checking a source for allly tubing tomorrow. Will keep you informed. I'm over in Canton by the way, working in the Bike Shed.

Cheers

Hi all, well I'm determined to get something going in the next couple of weeks. I've put together some mallets and should be able to source materials for more. I've even got two balls! If any of you could make mallets that would be useful, info for that is around on this site. Pontcanna fields car park could be a venue as a start but it would be good to have other suggestions.

Cheers

Just joined the group, you could add a thread to the trackdropouts bike polo subforum as an alternative to FB.

For playing polo, it is better have a slightly smaller bike than you would normally ride in the road.
A bigger one will mean, bigger circles when you try to turn, no a good thing.
What is your normal bike size?

I am a little over 6 foot tall and ride a 56cm frame (top tube) for polo, I try to get my back wheel under my bum as much as possible to reduce the wheel base and get tighter turns. If you are new to bike polo then I wouldn't worry too much about your bike for a while, when your game improves then you can rethink your machine and see what other people are riding and get ideas. It's good fun making a polo bike, very simple bikes to look at but suprisingly taylored to the sport.

Hi pip, frame size probs. can be overcome, a smaller frame could be sourced pretty cheaply and bits swapped over without trouble.

theres a small court just at the back of Howard Gardens (Newport Road). that would be fine for polo.

Hi all, I've just had a look at the courts behind Maindy Stadium and they look really promising. And even better at the moment they are left unlocked and are free.
They are not illuminated but as the clocks go forward this weekend and it's light till gone 8 there should be a good hour and a half of evening play.
Anyone have a preference for a particular evening? Any night but Wednesday would be good for me, starting about 6.30.
Cheers and thanks Pip for the suggestion of the venue.

Will you play any weekends? I can't really make evenings at the moment as the daylight is too short, perhaps May will be OK for evening visits as I have to travel from Bristol.

haha, yeh, that is pretty weird.
yeh, thats me, small tattoo behind my right ear. i work at boulders as well.

umm, not sure, when the weather brightens up we will hopefully get outdoors rather than to boulders, but that is dependant on getting more kit from uni, ropes, quickdraws etc.
otherwise outside of uni, weekends etc im sure we will be going climbin on our own outside.

ooh brill, drop me a line if your going outside at all, would be nice to have some people to climb with, i have not yet accumulated many partners of my own, what is always an awsome day out is taking a ride up to a spot, there's a nice cliff only 7 miles outside of cardiff, it is right by a huge road but i don't really notice the traffic, its separated by a nice amount of trees (good due to accessibility)

maaaarrrttttttin get some dates on the go :p

How about a knock about on Sunday at 3 at Maindy. The hardcourts are behind the velodrome. I've got three spare mallets so we can share them about. If some can't make it then there will be lots of other sessions I hope.
