i think the black annodising is the same as the silver, and have also seen highly polished ones, so i don't think it will be a problem as long as you look after it afterwards.

Aparantly this stuff called Lye is good.
Google: t

Been looking at MTN cranks for single speed, and the deanoized, modified, and polished XTR's (960) look amazing.

Ive removed anodising on rims with caustic soda with pretty good results, I reckon if you polish the fuck out of them after, they'll come up larrvely.

by the way IMHO i'd sell them and by silver ones instead of removing the anodising yourself. Sounds like a super messy and annoying job - and then one's you end up with won't have the hard outer surface or logo.

possible swapsies?

165's with a 50t ring.

i got them off AndyP, and was going to get them anodized black, but after looking into this, i've been told one-off anodizing can be a little hit & miss... and i don't really want to fuck these up. so i'm not sure weather or not to do it.

Dont even thing about doing it.

The whole removing anodising with caustic soda does thing does not actually work very well at all. It wont all come off uniformly. And then the the caustic soda will stain the bare metal a dark grey/blue colour which you will have to polish out.

It is a lot of hard work, which involves a fuckload of polishing even if you want them to look halfway decent.

Plus it will never last as the raw alu without hard-anodising will dull & go flaky grey colur in no time at all.

yes, but only one type of anodising, only good for small parts or stuff that won't rub.

I guess my preference would be a swap or some sort of exchange. Don't have the time for hand polishing.

Stick them in caustic soda then take them to the same people that Graham and I used to polish our frames?

They would get them to either a mirror finish or a matt/satin finish in about two seconds using their polishing gear.

Hey MG - I de-anodised my SilverSG75s .. This was in the summer of 07, when I was all prissy about having a shiny bike =). I wouldn't really recommend it, unless you are prepared to remove them every month and re-buff them. Mine look very dull now, but I don't really care anymore. Defeats to point of a fixie if you have to perform maintenence work on it all the time. Just my two pence.

no, it will come off uniformly, it won't 'stain' the metal. just need to sand it down a little. removing the ano with caustic soda is the easy part, it works very well indeed.

Yup, that sounds like too much work. TBH I wasn't after a shiny finish, just a matt silvery/grey finish. I'd be more bothered about the loss of strength sue to the loss of the anodise.

Negligible strength loss, don't worry about that. It's just to protect the alu so it doesn't oxidise with the air, it's cosmetic.
