2009-12-20 - Christmas Bake Off

On the coat tails of the success of the last one, how about a christmas time one? I've talked to Steve and have been offered the 20th as the best date for us to have upstairs. People up for it? If so I'll confirm with Steve and start working on catagories and prizes.

I think rules for this one should be no tupperware no entry

1. konijn! I've got a christmas cake chocolate truffle recipe I want to try...

Also, as fun as eating cheesecake with your bare hands is, plates and cutlery might be a good idea this time (bring your own if the pub can't spare?)

Slightly off topic...

I'm trying to get hold of ingredients to make Flapjacks, but i'm confused as to what oats to use... all the recipes say rolled oats but i can never find em in the suprmarket.

Could someone point out the obvious?

Possible additional categories:

Best Chocolate Log
Best Christmas Cake
Best Mince Pie
Special Vegan Category
Stollen
Biscuits (flapjack etc)
Sweets (as in truffles, choc covered strawberrys etc)

Probably try to do one in each category to avoid Pickle sweeping the floor again. Oh and no repeating past recipes!

Ok! I've had a think, and here are the catagories!
1. Best Christmas cookie
2. Best fixie mince-er pie
3. Best cake or log
4. Best savory
5. Best Ginger bread creation (this can be
a team effort!)

Remember, this will also be judged on seasonability!

Shame I won't be able to make this--not in London. However, I might well finally return Hugh's Tupperware box to him with something inside (sorry, Hugh, completely slipped my mind) and instructions to take it along on my behalf. I have a new cooker and can't wait to try it out properly. Ideally, this time I'd attempt a cake.

Pudding is going to be difficult which is why I left it off the list...Its best eaten hot and I have no intention of cycling round london's famous london with err a hot pud strapped to my back. Disappointed with the lack of a Mince Pie category. Thinking of a full turkey dinner in the savoury category ... is it allowed?

Oliver - forgotten about the tupperware box. It can wait. Shame your not going to be there - I was already planning how to bake vegan mince pies and vegan christmas cake.

Cheers, Hugh, there'll still be some other vegans there, certainly at least one!

I might just try that recipe sometime before Christmas, and I'd love to get something to the event, so I'll see who can courier it if I get round to baking.

Sorry all, it now doesn't look as if I'll get any baking done to donate for Sunday and to be there in spiritcake. But I'm firmly planning to for next time, and there are always Drinks to ply with cake in the meantime. If anything changes and I manage to do something, I'll let you know, but it would surprise me.
