I've had Moxier World installed from the get-go. I can always see the current weather, time and temperature at a glance in all the places that my family are.

Whoever bought the Dell Streak will be feeling rather jammy about now. Updated to Froyo 2.2 from 1.6

Acer have just announced a 4.8 inch phone with 1024 x 480 resolution, as well as very impressive specs.

They have also shown new tablets.

Unbelievably the Samsung Galaxy S 8MB has been marked for clearance by E2 sales. It is still the daddy in polygon shifting prowess, but other phones have better overall Quadrant scores. Still at just £299.99, its a steal, since its being sold full price in most places.

Nice one - that works well. Chrome to Phone seems a good idea but underdeveloped. And I still can't get it to send a url to my phone.

I might jump ship, this is what I've been waiting for: http://www.doubletwist.com/

Quote:
By "we," Johansen means his company, doubleTwist, which he co-founded in 2007. The doubleTwist software, which is free, is a kind of Rosetta stone for digital-media files: it can translate, reconcile and organize files from about 500 different devices and bring them together into one elegant interface. In June, doubleTwist introduced an Android app, and some 500,000 people have since downloaded it. Last year, doubleTwist scored a piratical coup by taking out an ad that read: "The Cure for iPhone Envy. Your iTunes library on any device. In seconds." It ran on the side of the building that houses San Francisco's flagship Apple store.

Anyone played spaghetti marshmallow? seriously, may be better than angry birds. Only thing is you don't get the full game free, just first 10 levels. Think its about 1.60 to buy and well worth it.

On another note, I find the camera on the desire really rather crap, are there any apps that result in a better quality photo, rather than just the gimmicky ones?

i finally recieved my desire (which was a desire) so will be asking plenty of dumb questions. Firstly...
Is there any sort of agreement on the best or most useful general apps? And more importantly, what's the best music player? All my stuff is on itunes so maybe that doubletwist one flagged a few posts back? anyone used it?

Doubletwist is great, I'd recommend it. Best thing about it is that you can sync wirelessly with your pc/mac as well through itunes.

Here are my top tips

Tasker - nuff said

Layar - Reality Browser, probably the best app on Android or any smartphone.

Last.fm - Player / Radio for Android.

ScrobbleDroid - Scrobbles tracks to Last.fm from the standard HTC mp3 players.

Album Art Grabber - Finds missing artwork for your mp3s.

Barcode Scanner - Scan Barcodes, and QR codes (useful with the site I've linked below).

BeebPlayer - iPlayer for Android. (update - now myplayer)

FxCam - Really fun camera app, Toy Cam mode is the best! I use this more than the normal camera!

PicSay - Like Photoshop on your phone. I have the Pro version and it's deffo worth paying a few quid for. So many options!

Electrum Drum II - Android drum machine!

GigBox - Finds gigs in your area, or can search anywhere. Ties in with Last.fm if you want it to - I like this feature.

Google Sky Maps - Works with GPS to show constellations etc.

SMS Popup - Texts appear in a pop up window. I really like this as you can read texts without unlocking. Just be sure to turn off notifications in the standard messaging app or you'll get two alerts per SMS received.

ES File Explorer - Really powerfull file explorer.

AndroZip - Handles zip, rar, 7z etc. More useful than you might think on a phone.

AppManager - Really good app manager.

Appbrain - synch and manage installed apps, search the market for apps

Apps Installer - Usefull for installing apps that have been backed up to SD card or downloaded from email.

WiFinder - Good for finding free wifi to tap.

Notes - Better than the standard Note app.

BatteryLife - Really cool battery widget for homescreen. Gives power remaining in % which is handy. The icon is really nice too.

AudioManager Console - Volume controls for everything on your homescreen.

Useful Switchers - Turn on / off most things on your phone from one app.

AdFree - Blocks ads in other apps. To update you need to revert first. Will make sense if you d/l it.
Check these sites for more:

http://www.androlib.com/ (use Barcode Scanner to scan the QR codes and it will take you straight to the app in the Market on your phone)

http://andappstore.com/AndroidApplications/apps/!index
Go here too if you want to know more about custom ROMs and homebrew etc:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=594

edit: keypass - password manager - use the same database file on your phone and PC(S) and never forget a password again - useful as it copies a username and associated password to the clipboard - good for umpteen stage bank security for online banking log ons

Kindle reader - nuff said

Catch notes - formerly mobisle notes

You're welcome, you have options of choosing different colour led flashing (if you have that on your phone) the format of the messages, background so on...
Also gives you an option to block numbers apparently.

I've been using it for a few months now. Glad you like it too.

Instead of rushing to upgrade my Desire to the Desire HD, I'm going to watch what develops from these soon-to-appear phones - the LG Star, Motorola Olympus and the unnamed Acer. Sony Ericsson has the Z1/PSP phone rumoured and the more appealing (to me) X12 Anzu, but their lack of updates could be a deal-breaker. Loads to choose from in the new year.

thanks for the monster app list. I'll try and start working my way through it. I looked at teh hd and the desire but went for the desire as the hd is just so big. I'm sure you'd get used to it but i find it hard enough to fit all my crap in my pockets as it is.

i'm blacklisting advert numbers all over the place. I'm also loving that my desire recommended links between my facebook contacts and phone contacts so people's profile pics are in my phone book along with recent updates, same for texts and things. Win.
