2009-10-20 - Rider Down/Fatality, Victoria Embankment

Victoria Embankment, just East of Waterloo Bridge, North side.

A portion of the road was closed when I passed through at about 8.40am, my guess would be that this happened sometime between 8 and 8.20am.

Female on a white/light grey mountain bike/hybrid, on stretcher with oxygen. She didn't look conscious, but there was no blood and the bike was in one piece. No other car, so impossible to say what happened.

Can confirm. Embankment westbound was sort of open about 20 minutes ago. Eastbound closed with tape and a crash investigator, from the Westminster side of Waterloo Bridge to Somerset House west service yard. The rider has been air ambulanced out, from Embankment Park.

Crikey, I hope it's not more serious than I thought.

I saw this too. I went through at about 9.10 and both directions were closed off with police milling around. The bike was intact (a white Specialized), but there was some bloody detritus from the paramedics and a helmet left on the ground. There didn't look to be any vehicles.

Fingers crossed.

The police tape includes a moped at the service yard entrance. Had a nose on my way in but couldn't see any visible scratching etc. The bike doesn't look bent out of shape either, they've just finished taking photos of it.
Eastbound Embankment remains closed.

I can add that the woman had her top off under the red blanket, don't know if that's a bad sign or routine.

I rode past this just after it happened at about 8.45am on my usual daily commute. As soon as I saw the police motorbike with lights on blocking the traffic I felt sick! Its horrible seeing a rider down.

The traffic along the embankment has been crazy this week. With the lines of traffic backed up at all the intersections people get a bit crazy changing lanes and motorbikes & cyclists tend to weave through the stationary traffic a bit haphazardly.. I got knocked off by a moped yesterday morning at the Westminster end of the embankment but luckily it resulted in nothing worse than a scrape on my leg!

Received a text this morning from my GF who works in Somerset house. She said that it was fatal but I cannot confirm this (no press coverage, other reports). Haven't had a chance to speak to her yet so can't check. Let's hope for the best.

That stretch is really dangerous, the cars don't give a shit on that bit and drive too fast and too close.

I don't think my partner would say these things just like that but as she is still working, I cannot ask her.

Edit: Crash was not fatal, girlfriend said it was serious though. Fingers crossed.

I've just heard that this cyclist died on 29th October. She crashed after being clipped by an overtaking motorcycle.

shit. that is horrible. my thoughts go out..

that section of road is very fast... with weird a lane merge then split again at the next lights...

This morning the same section of road cordoned off by police, but I didn't see anything much as I was on the other side of the road. But there was a bike propped on the gutter ... looked like a white mountain bike (may well have been a police one)

That section is dangerous at the best of times - road positioning is key, but makes naff all difference if you are clipped by a motorbike

This is really sad to read. My condolences to friends and family.

Does anybody know anything more about this incident? I've googled for more info but nothing obvious coming up. Reading comments on here and others on Bikeradar, it sounds like this was an unfortunate fall. Has anyone seen a report of what killed this lady nine days after what sounds like a bike on bike collision in heavy traffic?

Clipped by a scooter, judging by the post above and the fact that one was seen within the blocked off area of road on the day. What happened after that is unknown.

I meant in terms of why did a spill in traffic at perhaps only 10mph result in her death? It's the seeming absence of a major crash that has really disturbed me, for some reason. But this lady's story doesn't seem to made the papers, so I can't find any official reports. I wondered if anyone knew more.
