2009-10-15 - Rider Down, Turnham Green Church

The road was closed in one direction. Cyclist had been hit by a car door, judging by the immobilisation straps and neck brace he possibly has spinal injuries.

The driver was being interviewed as i went past - I commented "you are responsible for what your passengers do, idiot" and carried on.

Please try to give car doors enough room to swing open and for one passenger to get out, better safe than sorry.

Now that its getting dark, its even worse. I always look in driver's door mirrors if I see a shape in the car. But now its harder to see a reflection from the mirror. Hope its not a spinal injury also, and the spinal board was just a precaution as stated above.

Ride safe people.

Ouch! That doesn't sound nice at all. Hope the rider is OK.

A couple of months ago I was riding back home from souths with Chris, and on 4 different points on my journey a passenger opened their car door into my path. By the fourth occasion i was completely gob smacked, idiots all of them!

I work in this kinda "area"...we put casualties on boards even if their able to walk and feel fine.,....95% it'll be as a precaution!!

Last few weeks it's felt like car drivers have been paying less attention to what's going on around them, maybe something to do with winter closing in, everyone feeling a bit tired.

Anyway, as a result, even though it's not dark yet I've been trying to up my visibility from the front so drivers can see me coming, cyclists need to be seen, especially ones like us who having annoying habits of zipping all over the road at high speed, doing safe but unexpected things. More often than not car drivers just aren't looking for bikes coming from behind. So last few days when I've hit stationary traffic and am about to filter down the middle I've started putting the front light on, even though it's not dark, the light still goes on, just so car drivers are more likel to know I'm coming.

I think I'll leave it on all the way now home, riding into a car door doesn't sound much fun.

fk, best wishes for the rider. my daily ride is along past turnham green and gotta say i've had a huge amount of doors blindly swung open at me specifically on this stretch....I do think there's a correlation between the drivers/passengers of these chelsea tractors or merc/bm's; them stopping outside the boutique bars/shops to splash the cash; and being ignorant of what's going on around them...

thanks fk and touch 531, that i've been able to spot them in time and have a clear passage to swerve evasively... its not always possible...

I got doored back in Australia, 45km/ph (had cycle computer) to 0km/ph in a split second.
Was riding past a line of stationary cars on a busy road and the passenger decided to open the door.
The force of impact was so great it sent me and bike across the bonnet and I left a great dent in the rear doors of the van parked in front.
Had to be taken to hospital, fucked up for weeks.

Ever since then I ride wide and damn the cars behind. A hard way to learn a lesson though.

A few years back a woman was killed on Kilburn High Rd because of an opened door knocking her into traffic, dark.

i saw a woman get doored last summer after i had been cycling for about 2 weeks

going along old st towards the roundabout, the driver had just been sitting in the car with no lights on and just opened the door. there was no indication that there was anyone inside.

the lady did a full flip over the door and it actually dented the front panel of the car (and would not close again).

luckily it was after i had read Roxy's what to do in an accident... so I helped the woman out, got her to get all the relevant info and call an ambulance

have always given cars enough room for a door and someone standing next to the door where possible since then

Happened to me when I first started cycling in London. I was about 19, after having only cycled in the country before. A smartly-dressed, on-a-mobile, fat business-looking woman got out of a black cab without looking and I flew about ten feet, landing a fair stretch away from my bike. The taxi driver, predictably, shrugged and pulled off. I was a sobbing heap on the pavement; she came over and started pointing and shouting at me, the usual 'I didn't even see you!' illogical anger spewing out of her. I didn't have anything to say to that, really, so just left as soon as I could. It taught me the most important lesson an incomer can learn about London, on the upside: people are unmitigated fucking cunts.

I think you'll find the whole 'people are cunts' thing is a global problem just with varying proportions. saying all londoners are cunts is harsh but I can imagine that the accident creates a pretty emotive response.

this thread is dark...stuff of nightmares. feel bad for anyone who's been doored or close. don't give people a chance to fulfil there cunt potential and stay wide!

I've been doored a couple of times, but thankfully both times at relatively slow speed. The first time, I got the corner of the door in my chest, which fucking hurt, then the second time I managed to kick the door closed again before it did any damage. The guy in the car was in a rage calling me all kinds of names.

Hope they're okay.

I came within a bawhair of hitting a girl getting off a bus on London Road this afternoon (what is it with the words "London" "Road" and "Near miss" these days?). Bus driver was naughty and let her off at the lights without checking for me filtering down the left (in the so-called "cycle lane" I might add). So close she almost stepped into my front wheel. LRT drivers are generally a bit cuntish letting you off anywhere but the allotted stop for good reason so I was as surprised as Miss Near Miss.

Like Hippy said, ride wide.

I hit an object earlier this year, took the full force on my sternum, bruising the inside of my chest cavity. Worse things have happened at sea, but if this is the same thing that happened to you, I know that's it's agonisingly painful for a while, even hauling myself out of bed killed.
