To my amazement my current build is too old to take a front derailleur which sits happily with a 53 chainring. tried 4 derailleurs to no avail; therefore 52 anyone?

@ 50/14 - thought so; I just checked, and I've got one in a drawer, from a circa 2000 Veloce triple (52/42/30).

Very little use, as I could barely push a 42x15 at the time :D

Yours if you want it. I'm sure you'd repay the favour if necessary at some point :)
