I can safely say that a large proportion of drivers in Australia need no encouragement! Since moving here I have pretty much been heckled, honked at and almost killed on a daily basis, and hit twice (and that's lucky considering the number of near misses I encounter each day as a courier). I've been called a faggot so much I'm starting to believe it. Do they know something I don't? There's a few cars around with 'anti-spandex' stickers, which feature the no cycling symbol.

But to be fair there are also a lot of roadies here, and a lot of people who stop you in the street to ask about your 'fixie'.

I reiterate: Fucking savages

I lived there for 10 years and fucking hate that country.

If you weren't interested in footy, cars and surfing you don't exist in their spectrum of expected behaviour.

The amount of times I had people try to run me over when out skateboarding or cycling(even mounting the curb sometimes whilst I was skating on the pavement).
Numerous occasions having shit thrown at me from passing vehicles, including beer bottles..
People taking swings at you just walking through town with a deck under your arm.

A land of fucking, fucking, savages.

Nice beaches and weather though.

They can look at my sweaty arse, i have to breathe in cars fumes and see their fugly fat faces. This shouldnt even be on TV, IF i was on TV and advised anybody to try and purposly cause anyone injury or death what would happen!? RAGGEEE!!!!!! =D

I wouldn't go that far. There's just a lot of silly people out there. But the nice ones equal it out by being very nice.

Plus the opposition you get kind of reinforces the love of riding and makes the scene that much tighter.

That is just my 10 years of experience having to deal with every thug-bogan and surfie-dickhead.
People driving v8 cars on massively wide roads that still couldn't share or take a precious few seconds to allow you to clear an intersection.
I skateboarded, rode for pleasure and worked as a courier from '95 to '98.

I believe London roads to be far safer on the whole than Australian.

this sort of thing is really disappointing.

but, let's get some perspective. not even two weeks ago there was an english TV personality making similar statements in the national press. there was even a thread started on this forum saying the same thing about lycra-clad cyclists in Richmond Park. so let's not get "all the Aussies are fucking savages and racists!" about this - there are stupid, ignorant, thoughtless fucktards everywhere.

some context: Beach Road is THE main drag for serious recreational and training riding in Melbourne. On weekends it is like a bicycle freeway, and there have been incidents of bad behaviour by cyclists including one which caused the death of an old man who was struck while crossing the street. so the Beach Road thing is a bit of a magnet for anti-cyclist rage.

of course Magda is completely wrong in her point of view, and of course it's fucking stupid of her to imply that cyclists are fair game or don't deserve to be on the road. i grew up riding on Melbourne roads and i've been sworn at, had bottles thrown at me, had plenty of narrow misses, but it happens just as often in London.

I'm an australian, (living here) and although I agree there are some tossers amaongst us, there are also a lot of decent people who care deeply about our fight against racism, our indiginous cultures and our responsibilities to the rest of the worlds needy.....oddly enough these people are usually also cyclists in some form?!?!

Magda is currently an ambassador for weight loss program called Jenny Craig here in Australia. I have joined their forum and made them aware of her little rant and the obvious contradiction to her current employment.

I'm sure she will have some explainging to do as our countries obesity problem is Second only to the US. I will also be contacting our minsiter for sport to request an apology from Jenny Craig and Magda.

Keep up the good work fellas,
