2009-09-17 - Cyclist down, Poynders Road roundabout

Rider under a cement mixer turning onto the Poynders road roundabout from Kings Avenue, Brixton/Clapham. Looked very bad, paramedics everywhere, road closed etc, sent a chill down my spine. Air ambulance turned up as I went past, but on the way back they were loading the person into an ordinary ambulance so I don't know what that means.

No prizes for guessing how it happened.

SHIT!

I know that exact place and it's a c*** of a bit of road, buses and cars vying for one lane having been 2 lanes less than 50yrds previous. I cycle up it sometimes to Streatham to cut out Brixton

Doesn't sound too good :-(

It doesn't make sense to not let your wife ride, just tell her to stay away from the dangers. I understand your concern but cyclint brings a lot to peoples life, try to avoid the negative aspects

The first thing you can all do is tell other cyclists (on your commutes, friends, colleagues etc) to stay away from the insides of HGV, It happens every day. When you see it call it out, tell them dangers and urge them to tell others.
word of mouth will get out quicker than an organised campaign. both together will have a greater impact

There are 7,130 odd people viewing this forum now, if each one of those told one other person we would soon get the message out.
There are an estimated 500,000 bike journeys made in the capital every day, so best get started spreading the word

This is horrible news, i hope they pull through

I'm Wondering if a small thing such as trying to get as many cyclists to wear black arm bands or something would help, just to raise awareness.
Every little bit surely helps.

makes me sick this !

so many idiots behind the wheel dont care dont think ......
just earlier i had a giant truck trying to overtake me on a narrow road , for no reason other than they were desperate to get to a junction 3 seconds before me . they could have easily killed me the way they were driving.......

and the mayor wants us to cycle ?

They should make all drivers, cycle for 6 months on the roads before getting their license. Perhaps then drivers would appreciate others more vulnerable than them on the road!

I too live just around the corner from this and that junction has borne witness to many accidents. My sympathies to all involved.

At the risk of sounding very controversial, given the circumstances, I witnessed a cyclist get crushed by a truck at the junction of Sloane Street and Cadogan Place earlier this year. In this particular incident the cyclist was totally at fault as the truck was turning left off Sloane Street, having indicated his intent, but for some reason the cyclist decided to undertake him. Inevitably there was no way that the truck driver could have seen the cyclist as at the point of turning the cyclist would not have been visible in his mirrors. I have also witnessed many other incidents of cyclist stupidity undertaking busses and other vehicles that are turning left having properly indicated their intent.

The summer always brings out the fair weather brigade many of whom have very little road craft,if any, and it's hardly any wonder that such accidents occur. Those of us who are more experienced (and particularly as car drivers ourselves) might be less likely to be involved in such incidents.

Perhaps cycle retailers should do more to encourage more riders to take part in cycling proficiency schemes, or even make it compulsory when purchasing a new bike, so that can at least some basic road craft skills can be taught particularly to those that do not or never have driven/ridden on public roads.

I am in no way defending car/truck drivers as of course there are a great many of them who drive in a most idiotic and dangerous way, I'm merely saying that in some cases they are not always at fault and that as a community we ought to perhaps do more to encourage safer riding skills.

as for the armband thing, I can't see how would that work, first impression would be some sort of political organisation if I saw someone with that band.

finepics, there's a time and place for that.

Fair point. Just a small idea.
I would have though that a black arm band only signifies mourning and colours are political however.

finepics, what I mean is that the topic has been covered to great length already, as well as being too early to make judgement about the incident that happen on the roundabout today.

best to not speculate what happen, it easy to spread misinformation about something we don't know.

it's like the spokecard idea that sound great in our head, but completely useless in reality (no one look at bicycle's wheel, and impossible to read while in motion, etc.).

it could work if there are going to be another memorial/reminder ride where all the cyclists have the same armband, but at the same time, it could be a political ride.

point being, there are a surprising number of people who has no idea what a white bike represent (unless the bike have a big "RIP" sign on it).
