| | The apart from 30 minutes of non-stop explosions ... the expendibles really impressed me as it explored the values of redemption, kinship, the inner humanity and whether the soul transcends existence (Mickey Rourke monolouge while painting a guitar really went explored this subject). Stallones performance was gripping from the start to climatic finale, he was a gun for hire that needed to "save" his soul by risking his life for a woman that he barely knew, she represented the redemption that stallone was looking for. They also explored the themes of art, how it was influenced by war. They even explored the subject cultural warrior makeup aka war paint and how it represented the wearer. There was also biblical slant, as Terry Crews reminded us about the importance of Christmas. All in all it delivered on many levels. |

| | very good review there Lucas. If I may be bold enough to add, the theme of Americas place in world politics and history was also dealt with deftly. True to Stallones life long mission to liberate the underdog, the island and its inhabitants in this film are portrayed as the innocents, harking back to a time before the crass materialism of Americana arrives, the purity and innocence of the islander existence can be seen as a metaphor for what the mercenaries have lost. I would be surprised if there arent multiple Oscars earnt from the acting performances too. Last edited by j.m.f; 19th August 2010 at 11:44. |

| | Couture might not get an oscar though... he did kick ass most impressivly (As you'd expect) Loved the film it didn't dissapoint at all. A friend is so excited about this film, he was talking about hiring out the whole place and watching it, lifting weights, wanking and crying at the same time... Things are conspiring against him seeing it, he's starting to get a little mad heh heh |

| | inland empire- about an hour too long indulgence with digital film wise, but still lynch manages the whole transition between 'real'/dream storylines (a la Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive) better than any other time he's done it. that doesn't make it a better film, but just still found that particular aspect of his films stronger at least. anyone seen any of the interview projects he's doing at the moment? |

![]() Lets do everyone a favour and lets do away with poncy arthouse crap. Back on topic, Watched Happiness Last night and it was neither funny nor enlightening or tragic or any of that even though the IMDB crowd gave it an 8.0 or something. Tomorrow I am watching "Rear Window" by alfred hitch cock .. back when films didn't have to be poncy to be good. | |

| | Anyone moderately interested in seeing that Shane Meadows/Tom Harper/1986 thing soon to be appearing on C4? A lack of a tellybox means I haven't seen a trailer but have read a fair bit and am interested enough to watch it on 40D if it appears there. Reading a summary of his films, specifically 24/7 and Romeo Brass and how he came to make them and why today on the Empire website made me really think: "What the fuck am I doing with my life?" Bought Lebanon the other day. Piss simple idea, beautifully executed. Also bough Inglourious Basterds which I saw on release and was a bit non-plussed by but was hugely impressed watching it the second time around. Each of the chapters/episodes is so well paced, I didn't get bored once even though it's 2 and a half hours of bad accents. Fantastic, self contained shorts all working together to provide an excellent whole. That said I bet the next time I watch it I'll think it's shit. |
