what discipline are/were these "stayer" bikes used for? i see em in the internets all the time, but don't think there's such a sport officially run at the mo?

It's a long distance motor paced event, behind big bikes. Sometimes run at the Herne Hill Good Friday meet. It's highly specialised for both cyclists and their pacers. A really good Stayer race is quite a spectacle, but as there is no world championship or Olympic event and it is expensive to run, it is rarely seen.

Actually there are some races, at least in NL and D, but since it's not a discipline at the world championships, there's just very little interest. More or less like tandem sprint.
Problem with stayer / demi fond races was that most times the races were fixed by the pacemakers.

Also, many tracks are not suitable for the stayer races.
Either the dimensions are not suitabe (length, width, inclination) or the wood is that much worn that it cannot take the load & forces any longer.

I've watched the stayer training sessions at HH and not actually noticed any verbal comms going on but thats probably beacause they are riding to a preplanned pattern. The noise they make is ungodly so i don't know how a race could actually be controlled by the riders. See fixing comment above.

About a year go I watched a live stream of a derny paced criterium which was absolutely insane; big fucking ring sprint lead out pace for an hour+ :D

*edit* must have been the Belgian www.dernyfestival.be

*edit of edit* can we get some youts on scooters and recreate this round regents park please?

i really don't see this ^ as a competition, but rather a way to spend time on a bicycle riding behind a motorcycle? they must not get enough exhausts in their own little cities, i dunno...

Arnold in Koblenz imported / distributed Somec for a while.
That means: Roman rode races and meanwhile father sold goodies from the back of his car.
Nowadays, Arnold in Koblenz is better known as Canyon (sponsor Omega Pharma - Lotto team).
Maybe your bike belonged to a local racer equipped by the Arnolds.
