Stupid hub question- sealed vs cup and cone?

I've got an old (2008) charge plug that seems to have come with a rather dodgy cup and cone bearing. Looks like the new Charge plugs come with sealed bearings.

Presumably I need an entire new hub if I want to 'upgrade' to a sealed bearing?

Am I better off just trying to get hold of some new cups and ball bearings and getting myself greasy?

(If someone has better searching skills than me, feel free to direct me to the previously answered stupid question)

tell us what specifically is dodgy about them. have they come loose? are they pitting? have the threads stripped? have they melted? are they trying to sell you brakless?

cup and cone can be sealed too. Do you mean cartridge vs cup and cone. The bearings probably just need adjusting.

it's noisy and feels grindy, haven't tried adjusting them, could overtightening the wheel nuts have changed the tension enough to damage the bearing?

overtightening shouldn't do anything really. i assume as 2008 has been through winter so i would recommend regreasing them.

strip the hub,
clean,
inspect ball bearings ,cones and hub bearing surface for pitting with ball point pen,
replace any badly pitted part (can't do that with the actula hubs but balls and cone can be),
greaceand reassemble.

Park tools has a good guide I think.

personally i would recommend park stuff, oh and its easer with either a vice (or even easier) with 2 spanners actually i think you need one of those. . .

here are some links if you can wait for delivery/ pay the premium and buy from a bike shop. . .

http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-P...panner-881.htm
get a 14/15 and a 15/16, thats what i did, never looked back

After agonising over buying one of their cheap tools sets for £26, I got a pair of double ended cone spanners for a tenner: http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...Id_228852#dtab

It so wouldn't have been a false economy buying one of those park toolkits years ago. This is what it must be like buying shit from Brighthouse.

Just about to open up the hub and see what the damage is, fella in shop thought the whole thing could fall apart!!

^ I bought the cheap tool set - I think its worth buying if you're on a bugget.

Yes some bits will break bc its cheap - my lockring tool did so I got a pedros (which is the awesome)...

... but look at how much it cost to buy all that stuff - full set of allen keys, chain whip, tire levers, etc, etc, and half of it you'll only use once in a blue moon.

I say Halfrauds tool kit FTW!
