Best MTB shoes for road biking

OK, i think we need to have a discussion about cheap-ish mtb shoes for road cycling, my old pair which have lasted me for abotu 2 years have now got so many holes in them, but the main reason why i am replacing them is the fact that the sole is very bendy thus i get really bad hot spots

so under £90 whats a good shoe?

Wait for the sales at the end of the summer; go to Evans and get some specialed pro MTB shoes or go on wiggle at the moment they're selling sidi off fairly cheap!

£90 is a fairly decent budget if you're patient.

@SP - i can hardly justify £150 seeing as im 15 and i will grow out of them . . . hence why im asking for under £100 shoes
@harvey - no there not, im commuting 10 miles a day and on top going for a ride on the weekends. with flats i get pain in ankle and center of foot, i think i know whats best for me, its my choice where to spend cash :@
oh fucking hell i can see where this threads going, better go start a new thread for serious responses actually i might as well head over to bike radar

Just get some specialized MTB shoes that cost about £50 and be done with.

Shimano M182 on CRC at under 90 (just). Awesome shoe for my foot, fit like a glove(?). Have given them 2 seasons of mountain biking and commuting and they are only just starting to show wear. I would happily buy them again.

If you're spending £90 or £100 on shoes you may aswell just get Sidi's - Wiggle do them for like £125.

If you are certain you're still growing just get a half size too big and if you don't grow into them use an insole or something.

I'm pretty sure I've still got the same size feet as I did when I was your age.

I like the Pearl Izumi MTB shoes. Been using them crank brothers clipless eggbeaters. with Fit is closer to trainers than road shoes, and you can walk in them on the street without the clickety-clack..

Shimano RT51 are a road shoe for £50 that look like they will do fine for road and MTB in all seriousness.

Why do those shoes have the serrated knife-esque sides?

Last edited by lucas; 11th August 2009 at 23:14. Reason: apparently I think Sharrated means serrated.

I got Mavic Razors much cheaper than £90. Wiggle, I think it was. They were nice, but didn't quite suit the shape of my foot.

Well made, and worth considering, but FFS, go to a shop and try some stuff on first (and even that only gives an indication of whether they'll be comfy in the long run).

Well i've got a great pair of road shoes that I never wear because when i'm done cycling to somewhere, I tend to do a bit of walking afterwards and switching shoes getting on and off the bike was just a pain in the arse so I went back to clips and straps so I think people have a very good reason for using MTB shoes on road bikes.

most of the Gaerne shoes on Chainreactioncycles are on sale at the moment and they look pretty solid.

as mentioned before, Sidis are great. i bought a pair of old stock on ebay for £30 which fit very nicely. some sizes are more readily available than others, though.

Adidas don't make them any more so this post is a complete waste of time.

But Adidas have now been rebadged as Mavic, which, as we've already seen, may be comfy for Ed whilst he's getting his miles in between Calthorpe St and Condor, but irritated my instep and little toe on the more modest century and track rides I was doing when I bought them.

Oh, and Brixton had a lot of white Sidis on sale, although I'm not sure a) what sizes and b) whether it is just road shoes (they probably are - white MTB shoes would look so fucked so quickly).

you ever got into insoles?

some specialized BG insoles and footbed thingys put a swift end to all the foot problems I've been having for the last two years. High arches you see.

My feet are flat as fuck. I do use the cheapo Specialized insole (in my Sidis) that came in some crappy spd trainers. I also tried it in the Mavics.

The problems were all about the uppers and the shape of the last. I've got Italian feet.

The usual suggestions are Specialized BG, Sidas Conformable, Superfeet, etc.

I've got insoles from various old pairs of trainers getting a second life in assorted cycling shoes.
