Let's hope the book is thrown at the driver if that's the case. It's 2-5 years for death by dangerous driving if over the limit. Seems cheap for someone's life.

This is horrific and sad news and is becoming all too much as previously stated.

Rider down threads are becoming so frequent it scares me.

Rest in peace and my thoughts go out to the family and friends of the rider.

more terrible news. something really does need to be done about this. I've started a letter to my MP which I will finish over the next few days.

I would have thought the only person who is likely to do anything about this is the mayor. this may well have been spoken of elsewhere on the forum (we've had so many rider down threads I'm sure it has come up) but I think we should all write to him seperately. this forum has such a big audience now surely we could badger him until at least the cause is recognised. there are too many people suffering to be ignored.

I'm going to write to him, and will get all my friends, family and collegues who are willing to to also send a letter. A quick search tells me:

You can contact the Mayor as follows:

By email: mayor@london.gov.uk
Postal Address:
Boris Johnson
Mayor of London
Greater London Authority
City Hall
The Queen's Walk
More London
London SE1 2AA
Telephone: 020 7983 4100
Minicom: 020 7983 4458
Fax: 020 7983 4057

It certianly can't hurt.

The LCC run a campaign to encourage London Boroughs to participate in the 'Cycle awareness' driver training for HGV drivers. http://www.lcc.org.uk/index.asp?PageID=1399. There is some positive stuff we can all do on the website to help with this such as encouraging our companies to use suppliers who endorse a safe approach to HGV use etc.

Lambeth have signed up and if lobbying Boris it is a worth while campaign to get behind acknowledging the fact that a weekday ban is unlikely.

This is miserable news again, my heart goes out to the family and friends. RIP

Please let this be another inaccurate report. If this is confirmed, it is a tragedy. If anyone wants a reasonably well-informed explanation of why the sentencing guidelines are the way they are for this sort of offence, then I'm only too happy to oblige. This thread isn't the place for it, however, so send me a PM and I'll start a new thread.

Very sad to hear this.

I passed by about 9 this morning and it wasn't until I got to work and read an email from a mate that I realised that it was a cyclist who'd been hit. Such a horrible junction, that Brixton Road/Oval intersection (where I was knocked off three months ago).

So sorry to hear of yet another cyclist/lorry fatality. :(

I saw it and stopped, but could only get close enough to see that it was a woman. She was between the two (steering) front wheels and unconscious at the time. The driver was out of the cab and was clearly rattled, but a bit belligerent. Just went through there on the 185 about an hour ago and there was no sign that anything had happened.

I can think of no other way to prevent these incidents than to ban lorries during daylight hours.
And if necessary specifically target construction lorries and bin wagons because it's always them isn't it, not professional lorry drivers.

Rest In Peace fellow cyclist.

I was thinking the same as T-4003; we should have a forum(s) campain / petition to send to the major and all the local PM's. Even a template letter which we all use and send with our own details, everyone submit a few emails and letters per week.
Personally I wouldn't know where to start in a letter about frequent cyclist fatalities on London roads.

does anyone like the LCC or the Oliver Schlick keep a record of who has died and where at all?

I think it would be useful info if we were going to write to our respective representatives, just to highlight the repeated tragedies that happen with Lorries and dustcarts on our roads and to show that these aren't isolated events but situations which keep repeating themselves again and again.

My thoughts are for the rider today....so sad.

I've been out all day and have only just heard about this. It sounds like another perfectly avoidable collision and the news (unconfirmed though it is at this time, I suppose) that the driver may have been over the limit just makes my blood boil. Having said that, a lot of other cyclist/HGV collisions have occurred in which the driver was stone cold sober. The outcome has been the same.

Fixed.

We keep as much information as we can, but we can't keep a full casualty register. This is because there are cases in which the family don't want the victim's name to be known, and quite often the family don't want to speak to the press or other extrenal organisations.

The official keepers of statistics (without names) are the London Accident (sic) Analysis Unit in TfL's Road Safety Unit. They publish reports every year.

We work with those cases where the family want us to.

Definitely, writing to the Mayor is a good idea. Cyclist/HGV safety is not currently one of his stated priorities, and it would be fantastic if he made it one.
