| | It's pretty shit really to go from the thread about the terrible tragedy that happened at Holborn...where everyone has been full of sympathy for the victims loved ones...to then come on here and read this kind of shit. I'm pretty sure most of you don't know the Holborn victim any better than you knew Michael Jackson...and yet because he's a public figure it's suddenly acceptable to laugh at his death and make jokes. Unless you know him personally you know nothing about him other than the crap you're force fed through the mass media....and if you are naive enough to think that it's ALL true, then you're pretty stupid. You should maybe spare a thought for the Holborn victims family who have been reading the forum as they'll have been so amazed by the kind words and the love given on the Holborn thread, only to possibly see this and see a different side of the forum. |

| | In all fairness scott, the circumstances surronding the two different incidents are incredibly different. Jackson wasn't killed by terrorists attempting to propogate a flawed and reprehensible agenda, he was killed, ultimately by a combination of the lifestyle choices that he pursued and the arena in which he chose to live his life. In short, he bought it upon himself. I realise that it is rather more complicated than that but without going into detail, the victims of Holborn weren't aware that they could avoid their deaths. Due to the massively differing contexts the two cases are rather incomparable. |

| | scott I don't believe that is true. This reaction has everything to do with a media-construct and nothing to do with the 'person' of Michael Jackson. Since we were young we have had these representations forced upon us at every turn. The reactions are as valid as the heartbroken lamentations of those lining up in front of TV cameras the world over. |

| | Similarly, despite the complexity of the mechanics of empathy and grief, it's likely that we feel abnd share far more in common with the girl in the thread, than with someone who is, to all intents and purposes, from a different world. I'm angry that I'm even feeling the need to bite my tongue at the moment, as I've now got the right arsehole from having to compare the two. It feels cheap and shit. |

| | It is, in fact, just bad taste, regardless of what else may be going on on this board or by which timeline. The presence of other events and our interaction with them doesn't make it better or worse. And I wouldn't throw stones too quickly, it's only a week since you denigrated Jade Goody, who is also dead. |

It's different with MJ. (However, I agree with Scott that people should think before posting - for the family's sake. But I can also see that taking the piss out of the death of a celebrity in a situation like this in many ways is the only way to keep the reality of the MJ event in perspective.) | |

| | The forum isn't a single conversation: it's a collection of conversations, all happening at the same time. Some of them are grave, some are light-hearted, some are geekily technical. I think most people intuitively get that. I'd be the first to criticise anyone goofing off in a rider down thread, but what happens in a different thread, at the same time, is in my view irrelevant. For what it's worth, I was shocked and saddened by the news of MJ's death, but the negative fall-out on here was entirely predictable, and easily ignored. |
