Any riders in Poole/Bournemouth?

Apart from me and Pifko, is there any other members of LFGSS that are living in Poole, Bournemouth or surrounding areas?

Was thinking of organising a social ride for anyone don't care who, roadie, mountain bikers, fixed, hipsters etc.

Starting off somewhere central like Bournemouth Square, going into some countryside and stop off at a tea shop or a pub and get some tea/beer/grub. Any suggestions are welcome on route/meeting place etc are welcome.

Anyway if there are any riders that are about Bournemouth/Poole and nearby give us a shout here and we will try to organise something.

EDIT:

People who are near Poole/Bournemouth (I'll Update as people add themselves):

Tenbears10
Sweans308
Pifko
Kerley
emmeff
Smudgley
Arducius
Stevieboy
guffer
Edward_Wolf
tombarnett

If everyone gives me something like a Google-maps link of where they are, I will try to organise something soonish i.e. next couple of weeks, Probably be weekend, due to it getting dark early at the moment.

EDIT: I realised I haven't updated this recently ... If I have missed anyone around here ... give me a PM and I will add you in.

I'm in Bournemouth, ride s/s probably 80% of the time, have a couple of geared bikes when I go to the big hills in the country (and when it's nice weather, a pootle on my 3-speed Pashley).....have tried fixed, not sure I liked it though!

A meet up/pub ride sounds good to me.

A route I've done a few times in the past is a pretty flat ride out to Bransgore, via the Airport, Avon Causeway and Ripley....

.....starting at the Three Tuns, then (any/all optional!) The Crown, Fishermans Haunt, Carpenters Arms (full of old dears!), The Lamb at Winkton, Woolpack at Sopley, Avon Causeway (not my favourite though!), then The Curlew. As I say it's pretty flat, I've been out there with some non-s/s and non-cycling mates and they've enjoyed it. Best of all, none of those pubs serve Badger ale!

Another variation is turn left after the Avon Causeway, out to Ringwood/New Forest - did a 'tea shop' route there a few weeks back.....some of the long hills are tough on a s/s though!

But that's just asuggestion, I'm really happy to go anywhere......

I'm in the New Forest (Thorney Hill between Bransgore and Burley) Some very clear roads to ride on with pretty much no stopping as very few junctions.

Not sure where those long hills are though sweens as I haven't found any yet?

Maybe its all that beer from those pub stops making it seem more difficult :-)

My fokes live Bransgore / Thorney Hill too.

I'm not back down south very often but when I am I tend to go for a ride / walk round the forest for a few hours.

Hehe........I think maybe my claim of 'long' hills in the Forest was a little OTT!

I do remember my last ride in the forest and past Burley there were a couple of draggy ones that after so many miles and so few calories I found a bit tough!

I agree the forest is great riding, I quite like going up Thorney Hill....shame the white sofa that was abandoned on the side of the road has gone....that was quite a nice stop for a sit down and a breather!!

I've heard a new sofa has been ordered so a replacement outdoor sofa should be there soon. No need for those guys to take stuff to tip/pay to get taken away, just dump in on the verge and the council will pick it up :-)

There are certainly some 'characters' in Thorney Hill...

I've read on the Bournemouth Echo forum that it has been agreed, although people are against it as it was proposed as more of a community cycle track, for kids and such (Like Poole Park Track), when it's more of a race track for local clubs and so people are saying they were misinformed...

We should organise a van hire or something for a trip to Calshot sometime.

Also, is anyone part of any of the cycling clubs here? Looking into Jubilee Wheelers, but have no idea how to join.
edit - Their forum is back up - http://www.bjwforum.org.uk

Looks promising, and only about 12 miles from my house. Still never been to Calshot as it's around a 40 mile round trip so might be a struggle riding back home!

Should probably contribute to this thread, although I'm not in Bournemouth anymore...

Used to live in Charminster before my parents went and built a house in West Moors, so I can be found out that way every couple of months - although I don't always have my fixed with me as their garden virtually backs onto the New Forest and that's not the best terrain for 23s.

Interested to hear about the track at Slades - as a former 'SFL' it'd be cool to head down there and see what's new. Looking at the map it looks like the track's supposed to be behind Winton school?

I 'work' in cycling in area, Slades is going to happen when british cycling get the cash because they have been given green light from council (hardest part), its not gonna be banked tho, and more a club and community facility (open access) for races.
Hello anyway poolemouth, I like shredding a35 down through upper-lower parkstone past civic to harbour, best street flow I found here so far, like street riding fixed-anything.

Heh, commuted from Bournemouth to Ringwood for 3 weeks straight including the day when we had flash floods. The wind was northerly probably all but 2 days out of 15. The ride is a bit boring cause it is completely flat.

The only "hill" there just before 8km is the bridge where you have to go over the spur road.

My Dad used to be into Speedway racing, never done it myself, I know there is a track down by baiter.

The route you said was pretty fast is cool to ride down, can fucking cane it no traffic in the evening down there usually and it pretty fast downhill with round flowing corners, can really keep the speed up.

Sometimes we ride to blandford and back, the dips past banbury rings kill you and then massive uphill before almost a good 5 minutes of fast downhill.

Down that way occaisonally as my other halfs folks live in parkstone - usually ride over the purbecks down to lullworth on the geared bike or ss mtb.

not taken the fixie down there as not long had it and not sure i could cope with a long ride on it yet, or up/down some of the hills.

usually end up in le batau in lower parkstone for post ride drinkies..

A good fast-flowing downhill in Bournemouth town centre starts from the top of the Poole Hill roundabout, gun it down Poole Hill, left-hand lane at the lights at the Triangle (if they're green, even better!)....

.....then the sweeping right-hander on Avenue Road, into the Square. If you carry on, turn right at the Town Hall roundabout and hack on up the nice big hill at Braidley Road (gets hte blood-flowing on 46:16!).

Hey sweens, that's my route home on Monday and Thursday evenings! It's pretty nice when there is no traffic and the lights are green, though I do find the hill a bit of a struggle if I'm tired. But thats the challenge right?

I still really like heading out across the chain ferry to Swanage, Corfe Castle, and back. Have yet to try that fixed though, the climb up out of Swanage could be interesting, as well as that fucker of a hill down into Studland :).

I quite enjoy the Avon Causeway, a nice long flat road, can just cruise along at a decent pace. The A35 through the New Forest is pretty nice too, lots of flat sections followed by some good climbs.

Actually, I like pretty much everywhere around here. Don't think I've found a road/route I wouldn't ride again.

Just looked at the calshot activities centre site, no need to worry about bikes etc.:

Stage One - Taster sessions

Excellent fun for people wanting to try the track. All abilities are catered for, you just need to be able to ride a bike. You will progress at a pace suitable to the group, allowing you to learn the basics and get a real buzz from riding the track. We supply bikes, helmets and first rate coaching.

I read some info somewhere that there's a general rule for a max GI. High 80's I think. I'm comfortable with 78" (48x16) but 84" (48x15) looks good for the track.

There's a forum trip being organised already:

To be honest I dont dig cycling clubs, dudes tend to be real macho and competitive--I see fixie riding as more freestyle-like most of these writers here. some do have sick bikes tho..
Best option for dudes here would be all pile up with that forum thing, better vibe.when I last did Calshot with work they had 10 of us shredding together. they run 81"hire bikes and limit max to that..end of essay, message me if you need more info, cheers
