No idea on the play London sessions, I think they may have finished but there's no need to wait for them anyway, just turn up.

Peckham was used as a winter court for the snowy/freezing days but as it's still nice out it'd be the Newington court on a Wednesday. Search on "south polo" or "Wednesday" and you'll find the relevent thread.

Thanks both. Looks like it's straight in at the deep end.
Will keep an eye out for noob sessions though as it can't hurt.

best way to learn is with players much better than yourself, but if you want to there are two courts at 'souths' as well as a relatively clear surrounding area, so you may get to experience proper play as well as having a bit of space to practice dribbling etc...

realise this was posted AGES ago but I am a newbie - and new to the forum.....

been down to rollapaluza couple of times, and have met some lovely folk from the forum :)

Anyhoo - we have just set up a cycling society at uni in new cross and considering the absolute lack of any cycling-related fun / cycling events at the college have decided to try start up a bike polo team. couple of people who have played before, but the majority haven't. We are going to meet up to try and make some mallets - and then I guess we'd love to come check out some of your games / give it a try....

and yes we would all be feeling pretty nervous about showing up and playing with the big boys ;0

anyone who fancies some newbie games, reckon we'd be up for that too!

Is there any polo in oxford? This is a slightly hyperthetical question as i wouldn't be able to come down for a while as the bike i would use is in bits with some bits missing.

have you try to put in google "bike polo oxford"

the fourth result down reads "http://www.bikepolo.org.uk/"

if you click there, you have all the info you need to get starter

at the right hand side, there is a box that said, CONTACT

good luck!!

John, not every bike polo forum will give you this much shit when you first post. Good luck with getting started up in Oxford mate, we'll see you at a London competition soon and you can take revenge on these sarcastic bastards.

Hullo Hullo,
I'm new to the forum and new to polo - just started playing down in Peckham and am going to hunt for my first mallet handle tomorrow! Not so sure about this hsyteria about the secret peckham polo fight club - if they let an uncoordinated wreck like me in then they can't be that serious about world domination.
Look forward to meeting you all and getting good at this game!!

ok, this thread hasn't been updated since november and although the title says 'guide' i can't find any rules or do's and don'ts for beginers, can we have a short list with what is acceptable and what is not with brief definition or opinions? and yes i know it would be better to just turn up and play but it would be good to have an idea before turning up.

i've finally found a small frame and it should be on a court in a couple of weeks.

its a funny one with do's and dont depends how you play...

When you first start off you will often find your self in the way and that the ball moves around you and you cant get hold of it. Its a good thing to watch a few games and size up people moves/runs. I think that this is fundamental to keeping the game flowing. T-boning is not acceptable but obstruction and slowing players down is a great way to start playing polo.
Then mastering the mallet... this can take a while as mallet length/bike setup/gearing all play a part in getting better at polo... various iterations of these set-ups will have you playing a lot better. (not really answering but useful non the less)

Reseting goals is important... likes skoots has pointed out in the past, polo is about manners and etiquette is key too.

Everything else is kinda learnt on court.

Marlon im sure youll be fine youve watched a few games know a everyone there (pretty much) just come by with your bike. Dos and donts are found out pretty quickly.

- if you need bits and bobs for your bike put it out there on the polo bike upgrades thread im sure the crew can accelerate your build... i have bars, grips, pedals, seat post 27.2 brake caliper short drop, lever... and other bits.

Pretty sure I've got one then, it's a 42t shimano ring from a double crankset. I'll be at Wests this Thursday and around bricklane/polo on the weekend.

hmmm.. I wouldn't advise 'obstructing' as a great way to start, as you're the one more likely to come off worse! I would advise finding a space on the court instead, so team-mates can pass to you.
