Souplesse vs Spinning

hear the term spinning used a lot by fixed riders, i just took it to mean what it does, like spinning/pedalling, usually fast. am am also aware of the aerobic exercise, tried it a few times, it sucked, the seats are definitely not user friendly.

is there a specific meaning for it in regards to fixed? my mate reckons is the same as supple but i dont reckon that's right...

Noun

souplesse f.
  1. suppleness

souplesse refers to having a supple, even, smooth and mighty fine pedalling stroke, just said in a typically poetic French way.

fixed is said to help develop souplesse, which is an advantage in other forms of cycling as well.

we need BMMF for this.

I always took it to mean the ability to ride a fixed down hill without bouncing out of the saddle

that would be one ability that souplesse brings, indeed.

I went to a spinning class on friday because I was bored (cyclists night out eh..)

I kept jiggling about because my balls were getting crushed, but oddly no one else seemed to be affected. I was getting bruised & 'damaged' trying to keep my rpms above 140 so I kept fiddling with the seat & broke it.

I then switched bikes when the instructor wasnt looking, with which I gave a sigh of relief. But it turned out it was just as bad! So I continued to fidget around and ended up straining my thigh muscle trying to keep the pressure off my "special place"

Never again.

When your you have to pedal so fast its no longer about "strength" of your muscles. But your ability to spin your legs with souplesse extremely fast to enable maximum speed down hills or at the top end of whatever gear ratio your riding during a sprint.

A cadence (pedal revolutions per minute) of 90rpm + would generally be considered 'spinning'. Happy?

spinning = pedalling really fast.

sorry for the confusion. i thought you were asking about souplesse cos you kind of answered your own question about spinning.

As at l'Alpe d'Huez the previous day, Ullrich and Armstrong presented a contrast in styles. The German clearly relies on strength rather than what the French call souplesse, the ability to turn the pedals swiftly and economically, which is Armstrong's forte.

wow, exciting friday! why didnt you just ride your bike?

i basically went cos i knew the dude giving the class and he said it was the best way to get fit but i had the same problem you did, and faintly felt like the seat was trying to violate me when i wasnt sitting on it. maybe you gotta wear special underwear or lycra cycling shorts...
