Fox's presumed need to stay in the closet has absolutely nothing to do with his decision to take Werrity around the world with him on his own official business. Fox is well-known to be arrogant, a risk taker, loathe to take advice and prone to stick two fingers up at has Tory colleagues - his behaviour that has led to his downfall is a direct symptom of these traits.

People may well be reveling in the scandal, and the story of a Minister and a younger male "friend" may add spice, but it doesn't change the fact that Fox acted inappropriately given his role, chose to do so himself irrespective of his sexuality and Tory attitudes to it, lied about it and would have been quite rightly sacked had he not resigned. He would have suffered the same fate had the "friend" been female and he'd been unmarried.
I agree with this. My point (or agreement?) was simply that people seemed to be enjoying, and therefore perpetuating, the story because of "innuendos."

Nothing to do with the discussion here but it's the only thing I remember from chemistry so feel compelled to mention it. Thalidomide (Contegan) was/is a 'perfectly good drug' (hang on a second) depending on the racemic mix i.e. which isomer of the molecule was used. Can't remember which one was good and which one was bad but essentially the correct isomer did help morning sickness and didn't cause birth defects whereas the wrong isomer did all the damage. A case of ensuring your product is pure sort of thing (or getting conditions right to ensure the correct isomer was made).

That's all I learned during 4 years of chemistry. That and how to make TNT.

A minor but important clarification.

The two stereoisomers of thalidomide are enantiomers, i.e. mirror image chiral forms.

A racemic mixture contains equal parts of both forms, and that was the problem. Typically, industrial synthesis doesn't select for a particular chirality of an enantiomer pair, whereas biological processes often do, due to the chiral nature of natural proteins. Natural proteins always having the same chirality - e.g. the helix of DNA is always right-handed

Thalidomide is not completely safe even when separated into the "safe" and "dangerous" enantiomers, because the human body can convert one into the other.

Fair enough. My point was just that blind faith in authority to do the right thing and not make mistakes is stupid. As is a belief that everything they do is mad and malevolent.

Better to remember that they're all human beings trying their best to do the right thing, and occasionally dropping a clanger. Like all of us.

The thing is, regardless of whether you agree/like the occupants of Dale Farm, supporting their right for due process is a separate issue. I don't agree with the protests in the city at the moment, but I like the fact that it's possible to do that here.

One of my family was seriously considering working for Saddam Hussein's defence team. Not because they supported him, just because they believed in the importance of a fair trial.

As for the money... well money is wasted in lots of places, I'm not sure that in itself is an argument. Apparently, the new 50% rate of tax costs more to administer than it brings in.

Just to balance up your views, this comment on the DM website in response to Simon Heffer's article is quite good at explaining the otherside of the story.

Quote:
The UN do define Travellers as an ethnic group - whether you like it or not. An ethnic group is not decided by the colour of your skin but your cultural practices. And the council, and indeed the country for many years, have failed to provide housing that meets the cultural practices of this ethnic group - i.e. Traveller sites. This was one of the reasons UN said there was a failure to to meet the Travellers Human Rights. What is really shocking is this has been going on for so long and now this Council is forcing people out of ther homes without providing any reasonable alternative - which means a site not houses. This might meet the letter of the Law but not the spirit - or underlying principles. I hope it gets to the European Court and they win. Human Rights were brought in as a direct result of Hitler's atrocities - including persecuting and murdering millions of gypsies. The UN professor was right: this country's Human Rights record is beginning to resemble China's.

Saddam should have a fair trial, his passage to power, supporters and corruption that followed needs un-earthing so the compete picture is known and all involved are outed as much as possible.. apart from Thatcher. she had all our best interests at heart, as did her son.

That aside, i fail to see why these should be entitled to a fair trial. they got one, failed, another, failed. and are now scratching around for a whimsical excuse to save their. what at the end of the day* is, illegal development.

There should also be a weighting on how much investment of time and effort should go in to the search for a fair trial.
If a copper can decide a white van driver assaulting a cyclist hasn't got the legs for court so dismiss it, then surely the council can look at dale farm and say - two hearings and thats it we set them on fire

We've got a lavazza machine - a bit like those Nespresso ones.

The coffee is pretty good, not amazing, but still good. It's free for the machine, you just have to buy the capsules, which are about 60p a pop.

One of the best things is that if anything goes wrong, they're really good at coming quickly. Plus they always have a spare in the van so if they can't fix it on the spot, they replace it.

Maybe have a look into it.
