National Hill Climb Championships

Who told this 13yr old to HTFU?
Because he has. Front brake only and a singlespeed on a hill climb!

Most hill climbs are raced on SS of fixed. The aim is to strip as much weight off the bike as possible. Good on the kid. I tried racing one once and came second from last to a guy whos chain snapped half way up...

nothing to do with HTFU.....it's very normal and quite common...

loads of people ride fixed in hill climbs and even other TTs, CTT rules follow that of the highway code...therefore fixed wheel bikes must have a front brake.

It's a young man's game.

On the drivetrain front, it's probably more impressive that Bill Bell managed to get in the top 3 without using fixed on that climb; and that James Dobbin managed to finish at all, having snapped a crank or something just minutes before the start, and then having to use Danny Axford's bike... and shoes!

i think the guy who won the mtb category at catford this year only had a brake on the back. i was chatting to him for a while. i could be wrong though.

disappointed that there didn't seem to be as many on fixed at catford this year compared to last. but then i am just full of respect for anyone racing up that climb

I still think Catford's ultimately a geared climb, but if I ever did it again, I think I'd go back to 55" fixed.

Gears apparently leave me too much psychological space for focussing on my depressive/sociopathic episodes, rather than HingTFU and dealing with +-2mins of excruciating weirdness.
