Crank extracting, mystery?

Having a very problems with this supposedly easy job. I'm pretty sure I've got a square taper bottom bracket but after removing the bolts without fuss, I screwed in the crank extractor also without a hitch. However on screwing in the remover ( push down thing) it got very stiff very quickly and it wouldn't go any further. The crank showed no sign of coming free. When I took the tool out this little mystery fell on the floor? Wondering if it's come off the cranks or the tool?

pictures below:

Does the little spindle thing go in the round jobbie? I can't get the thing to go back into either the bike or the tool.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, cheers

What crank extractor were you using? This looks like the bit on the end of the extractor that pushes against the bb axle. Its seperate and should spin in the tool so that the tool doesn't chew up the end of the axle when you're using it.

that looks like the top hat you put in the extractor when removing splined BBs (ISIS, hollowtech, octalink)

try the extractor without that tit.

or maybe post a pic of the extractor now

After removing the bolts you can see the shape of your spindle.

you can usually see the shape of it anyway, just by looking with your eyes, and then using the brain to register the shape.
