Offline maps app recommendation?

I know there's plenty of offline map apps available, infact there's more than plenty, there's too many.

Anyone got recommendations of which ones are worth using? I'd like to be able to add markers of my own, like for things I want to visit that won't be on tourist maps etc.

I've used CityMaps2Go (avaliable in Android and Apple) on an iPhone. There's a free version (CityMaps2Go Lite). I think you can only download 2 or 3 maps with the free version on an iPhone. I had no issues with it at all.

I've only used it in Tokyo though, so I'm not sure of it's "outside major cities" capabilities.

EDIT: I think you can add your own pins / markers using this app.

The OS map base on Viewranger is pretty awesome. 10 buys a huge number of map tiles, which you then download as you need. It also finds your location using GPS and spells it out with a grid reference which is really cool for telling someone where you are.
You can create routes and tracks and look for routes and tracks made by others.
I use it all the time.

If you're going to a popular city, the TripAdvisor apps are great, you can download all sorts of info to use offline, including reviews, day trip/walking plans etcetc

Google maps don't have layers that show rights of way, national trails, sustrans routes, historic and heritage sites and contours, to name but a few things

Or cache search results/ratings offline. Also your link is for an outdated version of GMaps

I downloaded CityMaps2Go Lite shortly after posting and it seems to be doing the trick. It's for a trip to Berlin that I was asking so yeah, dunno about the "outside major cities" capabilities but for Berlin it seems pretty comprehensive. Stuff like the Keirin Cafe and wierd obscure veggie restaurants I've been looking up for the gf are in it!

While those instructions are for Android this does seem to work on the Iphone BUT all I get is the map. I can't search and the Google maps app doesn't (so far as I can see)have any way of linking to maps created in the desktop version of Google Maps so I can't mark any locations.

Pretty useless if you ask me.

I use Sygic on my Galaxy S4, full range of TomTom (iirc) maps. Costs a bit for maps, but you get a lifetime license with free updates, loads of useful features, etc. Worth a look at the very least.

Ah cool.

As I said, I used it in Tokyo quite a bit and it worked really well.

I use off maps on my ipod, its pretty good. You pay to download the maps but it works global and has information on whats about, food, cash points, shops... locates you pretty well but you cant do routes off lines.

For the last 2 years, I've used Routebuddy atlas. The App itself is just about workable (5 out of 10, I'd give it), but the reason I picked it was the very reasonably priced topographical maps (about 40 for a "grand region de France"- about 7 or 8 gave the whole country)

However... This year's trip was Czech Rep/Austria/Germany for which maps were not available on Routebuddy. So I tried ViewRanger.

The App itself is so much better than RB one. And it has a great feature- offline maps based on Open Street Map/Open Cycle map. Choose "create offline map", select the squares you need, hit OK and give it a while to download (about 20 mins for a 100k ride on decent wifi)

Decent mapping for free. You can buy credit to spend on professional maps in the same way.

You can also create routes on the phone (no internet needed), create POIs and record your route.

I have just returned from a 5 day trip to Belgium where I used a GPS app on my iPhone called NavFree (Benelux). This worked perfectly without needing for my internet to be turned on, and always showed me exactly where I was. It worked better in the countryside, but also in the cities, if a little slower.

The route option does select the fastest route to where you want to go, but it you fancy changing that route when you spot a nice road you want to go down it will recalculate your route quickly. It was lovely to not have to carry a map, and to have it all on your phone. Furthermore it have places of interest saved in it (if you want to look for a nearby hotel or rail station) and didn't run down my battery noticeably. So long as I charged every evening I was fine.

It may have been that where I was, North Belgium, is so flat that the GPS worked perfectly, but still, even when it didn't (such as when I was on a train) I still had the maps which was good enough.

It didn't have any cycling features (obviously) but it was great just for directions and exploring.

TLDR: If you're going abroad (or even in the UK) and don't want to unfold maps all the time and can't afford to have your internet turned on abroad, then download NavFree for the country you're going to.
