Curling on the Loch, Lenzie, East Dunbartonshire

1910 view of curlers have a game on the Gadloch on the outskirts of Lenzie and Auchinloch. The farm at the end of the loch and most of the trees are still there today although trees and bushes have grown around the shores of the loch since then.

OK, I'll conceed that the man is crying, but when you read the reason why, hopefully you'll smile.

Vietto had a serious shot of taking home the yellow jersey. As he descended a mountain, he was informed by a race marshal that his team’s captain, Antonin Magne, had crashed near the top of the hill. So he reverses course, back up the mountain, with his fixed-gear bicycle to aid Magne. He gives his front wheel to his captain, drags the remainder of his bicycle to the side of the road, sits on a stone wall, and weeps like a baby.

That sort of passion is a beautiful thing.

General Lucifer 8th October 2010 13:51

I love the René Vietto story. King René, he was known as. An awesome climber.

Here's Bartali:

I don't have any pics but am loving the ones posted so far.

In terms of Friday smiles, I think I've managed to get my new tires both sealed up and it's sunny and warm here.

Additionally, without wanting to sound like a suck, this is absolutely the nicest forum I've ever been a member of and I've been on a few.

That's incredible. I absolutely love the tales that go with the TdF. No other sport has anything like it. I guess football and the like is all contained on a little field - what could possibly happen there?

Over 100km of mountain road you're going to get some better stories. Can anyone reccomend a good book that's full of this stuff?

cliveo 8th October 2010 14:31

"One more kilometre and we're in the showers" by Tim Hilton (I think)

Great source of cycling folklore.
