  • ^my mate had one of those nicked a while back

insurance scam or he just fancied having it stolen?

  • must put thread on ignore!

  • So, it looks like I am going to have to re-plumb my disc brakes to get them onto my Swift. I figured that I may as well upgrade the hose whilst I am at it but was unsure whether the hose-end fittings are precisely the same from plastic to braided hosing. Anybody know?

  • Which hoses are you going for? And what brakes?

I'd recommend these helperformance.com/mtb/ Different fittings to the the normal push fittings but I've had no problems with mine in over a year.

I've only noticed minor improvements in braking performance (I'm sure the pro's have there own views on this) but in terms of durability they are much better than the plastic hoses.

  • Sorry. Should have been more clear. I am re-using the Giant MPH brake system from my 26er but it seems the geometry is just different enough to render the current hoses too short. If I have to buy new hoses anyway then I'd like to buy some braided ones but I'd also really like to re-use all the hose fittings that I already have.

  • Ben

Are you going to reuse the 26er at some point?

  • The Hel ones come with all the fittings, and yes they are pricey.
As far as i know you can reuse the same fittings, but change the copper washer/seal.

Most likely yes but with V-brakes and SS. It will become the 'mule' for hauling the kiddie trailer around. I wasn't planning on doing this but unfortunately the trailer hitching doesn't fit the Swift.

Hrm, OK. Interesting. I've also just been playing around with BikeCAD and realised that I may perhaps have over-estimated the size of the headset spacer-stack and stem that I require. Will do some more measuring when I get home to confirm but if I can drop some spacers and go to a shorter stem it may remove my need to replace the hoses.

  • Crisis averted. Turns out I had massively over-estimated the stem length I need. So no hoses required but I need to get a different stem :-/

  • good news

just post a wanted for the stem, you may find one on here

  • Yeah indeed. Got to re-visit my calculations and figure out what I do actually need.

  • giant brakes are not brilliant why not buy some shimano/hope/formula's instead of posh hoses.

  • Hose = £4-£7 per metre
New brakes = At least £80 from what I can see (happy to be corrected here)

I know the Giant ones aren't great but they have the advantage of already being in my possession :-)

  • shimano 535s seem to be well respected

  • hi there i've just ordered a 29er Singular Pegasus and I was thinking of getting some bling rims but I am finding it difficult. There seems to be much more of a variety on 26in rims which I know is understandable, I was just wondering if anyone knew where to get some from? Cheers

  • What do you mean precisely by 'bling' is, I guess, the most important question?

I reckon the tubeless Stan's setup DJ and I have opted for is pretty cool but it doesn't look particularly blingy.

  • What i mean by bling is for example annodised rims like the the crank brothers or halo rims. I also was thinking about chrome as well.

29er rims are'nt as easy to find in the UK as the US. But there are a few small web shops if you look around. Halo are pretty easy to source at least. I've bought wheel parts from germany on several occasions, as I'm a fussy bastard.
This shop has a great range from weight weenie carbon by AX Lightness, to the fantastic and fat Salsa Gordo.

  • BTW I bought some chioce parts from that site in the past and recieved decent service.

  • chrome rims will be heavy. Not something you ever want on a rim unless you need the strength, even less so on a 29er where one of their biggest draw backs being the increase moment of inertia.

  • That last track looks like it had some pretty gnarly, sharpish rocks.

My 2.4 Ralphs arrived today so give it a few months and I may be qualified to add to the tyre debate. First impressions are that they're fairly light for the size.

    thats hot! want

In my opinion width is everything. For a small weight penalty you get increased lateral stiffness, but more importantly you get more tyre volume, and can drastically reduce your PSI without fear of pinch flats.

The Velocity P35 is 35mm wide and comes in loads of colours. Its pretty tricky to source in the UK though. The Salsa Gordo is has similar dimensions but is only availible in black AFAIK.

I have Velocity blunts at the moment, and these give a good balance of lightweight, strength, and width. My next rims will likely be P35s though.
