Soma Mixte

  • Just saw this in Brixton Cycles, Soma Buena Vista.
Looks like a very nice ladies bike, and I'm pretty sure it'll weigh a load less than a Pashley Princess.
BC are selling it frame only for £400, and a built up single speed version for a grand, they've got a couple of frames in stock, but more are on the way.

comes with a 132.5mm rear hub spacing

    • In Bacardi White

    that is all...

  • Lovely...

  • Bacardi white? I'm amazed Nhatt let that one pass. :p

  • I would love to build my girlfriend one of these, not sure she would appreciate... :/

  • Spam... Reported...

  • Spam... Reported...

Someone else actually did report it... but it's not spam.

Corny has no benefit from this, does not and can not profit, and it clearly just sharing. He's just saying, this is damn nice... and then giving all the details he can find.

It's not like BC asked him to do this, he clearly saw it, liked it... and then asked them about it.

For me, this is the stuff I want to see, core members of the community who don't promote stuff often coming forward and being excited about something enough to share with everyone.

    It's cool with me.

Now, if BC had asked him to, if BC were giving him a back-hander, if he knew BC on more than a customer + seller basis (biblically), etc, etc... if there were anything in it for him. AND if he wasn't also a core and long-standing upstanding member of the community... then it wouldn't be cool... then I'd probably call it spam too.

  • yo! Vb, thanks for the backing, but Jo Jo's just stirring as is his want, and whoever reported it as spam, lighten up man/woman/person!
its a lovely frame, that no one seems to know about, and for all the forum members who are constantly looking for a nice fixed/singlespeed frame for their girlfriends/partners/wives, this seems like a perfect choice.

As is now common forum practice, copyright CoppiThat, Sorry if I missed something...

  • Lovely looking frame. OTP step-through frames are'nt exactly common. Those wood effect rims never work though.

  • ...i really hate step through frames but, that is quite nice.

  • Being a mixte frame doesn't necesarily make it a ladies' bike though, right? Mixte being derived from the french for unisex according to wikipedia.

Actually I'm currently building up a mixte for my girlfriend. I'm not sure I get the point of this frame, though... seems like a lot of money and the example build is pretty much hideous...

  • @ rich, the only people I see generally riding mixte's are women, and for some reason in my head I have the step through frame as being a female only design for the usage of skirts whilst riding, whilst every male on this forum (sweeping generalization alert) wants to find some sort of mixte to build up for his partner/girlfriend/sister/mother. So thats why I've put it up as being a possible alternative to pashley's.
this blog agrees with you, in terms of the inherent unisex nature of the mixte, so I may have to change my mixte view.
    letsgorideabike.wordpress.com/2009/02/13/kiss-my-mixte-ass/,

though no advocate for soma, truth be told I do have a smoothie as my road bike, I like them as a bike manufacturer, and the fact they make steel frames, when the whole world's gone alu, also they're based in SF which is cool in my opinion, and I'm supposing the point of this frame is that not many manufacturers are making modern mixte's, only three from what I can see after a quick google, the soma, the masi soulville mixte commutebybike.com/2008/02/20/masi-soulville-mixte-the-stepthrough-version/
and the rivendell betty foy, which isn't especially cheap, rivbike.com/products/list/bicycle_models#product=none

but more choice in terms of frames and designs is never a bad thing, and until more people start riding mixte's again and the big manufacturers jump on the bandwagon, the price point for these sort of frames will probably still stay high.
But if I wanted to buy a frame to build up for a woman, I think I'd put some money down on one of these...

    Fail. Mixte is for chicks.

When I bought the mixte I'm building for my lady, I referred to it as a ladies frame and got a telling-off from the mechanic at the shop. Also, I got it for silly cheap, which probably biases me a bit. I guess I was lucky.

I'm not knocking the soma! I think it's good that they're building steel, etc. But it's not for me. Couldn't you get something custom built for just a bit more? I was thinking some british framebuilders prices start from ~500. Maybe I'm remembering it wrong.

  • Fail. Mixte is for chicks, and blokes who wear long flowing skirts

    fixed
