  • today i have had a little accident because of a pedestrian. in front of charing cross, this massive wave of people crossing on the RED LIGHT for THEM -- hence GREEN LIGHT for ME.

this one girl very concentrated looking on her ipod while crossing, while most other people decided to give me room to cross among them. i decided to cross behind her, as she wasnt paying any attention, but when she finally realised that there is a world spinning, she thought it was a great idea to move BACK. i was already breaking, so i pulled even further. in the end, she hit me on the side, making me tip over and with front brake shut, i ended rolling on the asphalt with my bike.

in the end i got a bruised/peeled off knee, shifter looks a bit sideways, but i'm fine so does the bike. and it wasnt even necessary to say anything as i put my extremely pissed off face that even other people not involved stepped back. and the girl didnt even fall or anything.

i wonder, should i have just aimed right into her or what? at least i wouldnt be hurt now, but i dont know of any laws in case of pedestrians being runover by cyclists or even if their wrong doing makes any friking difference -- given that they were all crossing on the red light... why do cyclists get fined for jumping lights and pedestrians can do as they wish?

  • Just slow down a bit when you're in an area like Charing Cross, best to be safe than sorry.

Law against peds? you are a peds when you get off your bike!

  • Because.....This is London my friend.

The voice of common sense as always Ed.........jeez, if only we could all be as perfect as you eh, your self-righteousness is pretty grating sometimes....

"A wise man speaks because he has something to say; a fool because he has to say something".

Would it kill you to be a little understanding sometimes, instead of continually telling people off like you're some kind of school teacher?

bringing it bang into the digital era!

    Haha repped!

    Pardon?

    ;)

  • Since when did common sense become self-righteous? I don't see anything wrong with Ed's post. On your way to the chip shop, DJ?

  • i usually lok far ahead around those areas, and a very loud whistle/shout/balloon noise with your mouth generally works to attract their attention and cause them to shift sharpish.

i definitely play safe, that's why i was already breaking. what i wasnt counting with was her moving backwards. if i had not tried to avoid the collision (that's what i meant with aiming at her), i would be fine now, not sure about her.

true, but that doesnt mean that people can simply jump in front of a bus and the driver would be guilty. it simply makes no sense at all.

the problem is these people with earphones and max volume. they dont want to her anything external...

  • i wonder, should i have just aimed right into her or what?

    No.

  • you should have crashed into her Ipod, you would have done her a service, so whenever she is next at crossings with her Ipod, she will remember about that b*stard cyclist that nearly broke it and cross safely.

who can blame her, she was listenting to Akon.. he fucking rocks

  • Sigh...too many women these days just want Akon internally.....

  • If there are peds in the way then I'd slow down/stop.

No point trying to negotiate them at any kind of speed as they often realise their mistake/your presence last minute.

It may be frustrating but only as frustrating as motorists having to give cyclists some room (I realise they often don't).

if procreation was your intention then yes.

    sorry if i missed something.

  • Get a bell, you'll be surprised how well it works.

    a what..?

  • balloon noise.. you know a dry squeak that comes when trying to bend and twist a dog or a giraffe. it can be made by holding closed one nostril, placing a piece of gravel in the other, dry your mouth with the crouch of your bib shorts and try breath out whilst touching your eye with the tip of your tongue.

Not safe enough. If you don't want to hit anyone then you have to play it safe enough to stop if the obstacles in your path become unavoidable. I'm not surprised that she stepped backwards, it's a fairly standard human response that we do not perceive anything in the path behind us and under a threatening situation will often instinctively return to the closest area of safety. You mention a massive wave of people, I would imagine that she didn't think that she would be able to reach the safety of the other side of the road.

Right of way or not, I'm not sure why you thought it was a good idea to try and pass through a massive wave of people and not sure why you thought she would accurately make a snap judgement on your direction and react accordingly.

I used to suffer a similar situation coming out of Victoria Street towards Pimlico. People were always edging out into the road ready to cross at the first sign of a gap in the traffic. I got clipped a couple of times and knocked off once. After that I took to occasionally riding really close and screaming at them. The look on their faces? Gotta be worth a mink coat each.

Something about a fee I think

  • no, he means like this, subtle but effective
