  • no prob .. i hope it helps, it had actually been confusing me before too but i hadnt thought about until you stuck the diagrams up .. i don't actually see how their square design is an improvement on a round shackle anyway as if you've ever tried to saw through something then the hardest bit is always getting the initial 'groove' to start cutting into and a corner is a perfect for the job as you only have to scratch it slightly to have an indentation to start working against .. seems like 'verbal' technology to me

  • I don't necessarily agree with you fully. I think the square design is an improvement, but maybe only in negating twisting attacks.
I thoroughly enjoyed your well thought out argument though.

  • I have a krypto fag mini d lock, and i'm thinking of getting a second lock to go with it.

Anyone use the abus steel o flex 1050?

What i like about it is i can wear it around my waist, so its easy to carry, the reviews for it seem pretty good too.

  • To be honest, that look pretty weak.

  • To be honest, that look pretty weak.

And it cost the same as 3 mini evo's!

I might just give it a miss.

  • just purchased my first bile thats actually worth nicking. this, and other forums have come very much in handy when choosing what lock to buy and how to use - so thanks everyone.

I already have a chunky abus chain and have ordered a kryptonite ny mini fagh, currently awaiting delivery from amazon. However since ordering I have noticed it doesnt seem to have a sold secure rating, either on the amazon website or on the kryptonite site. Anyone know if this is correct, and if so why? I thought it was the toughest mini D out there. the mini D is cheaper and looks less secure, but has a silver rating. I need a silver rating for it to be valid on my insurance. If its not valid perhaps i would be better off sending it back and getting the mini evo.....

  • sorry everyone, thats BIKE, not bile!

  • The Fahg Mini looks ''less seure'' than what.......another bike lock? That's rather doubtful.

However, SoldSecure have only provided a rating (GOLD obviously) for the New York STD lock.......and not the Fahg Mini.

The solution may be to buy the Motrax Viper disc-lock/U-lock. Its passed by Thatcham, which is higher regarded by insurance companies than SoldSecure.

If the insurance company insures motorcycles, then is will insure a bike locked with a Thatcham approved lock.

  • 2 fahg minis FTW.

  • Does anyone have any practical experience with viro locks?

  • VIRO U-Locks of Italy, may be ordered in the UK from Intercitylocks or DiscountLocks, as they do business with VIRO
(no guarantee though). Will add to the list, when available directly from a UK shop.

    Viro U-Lock 16mm

  • He got a thicker lock but locks to the thinnest rail:

I like my bike locking technique being critiqued. Now if you could tell me how to go faster with less effort then I'll be done.

Note on the Kryptonite New York.... very good lock. Not had a theft (touches wood ahw! so immature) left it a couple of times in hotspots like camden etc. Always with two locks (one is a chain lock). Lock is ridiculously bulky and when locking to the classic lamppost the bike needs to be standing on the back wheel due to not been able to fit around the bottom thick part of lamppost.

Those thick based lamp posts are a pain in the arse. And the CCTV camera poles... If you're going to have CCTV everywhere, at least make it useful to people!

Anyway, so your solution is Kryptonite NY through frame, front wheel and upper post and chain through back wheel, frame and post on the bottom?

Yeah sorry for my twatty post and comment saw afterwards on your blog you know full well how to lock a bike, been watching too much "Hal Grades Your Bike Locking". Someone had a go at my bike the other day, the NY3000 and Evo mini stopped them, but they tried to break one of the thin rails it was locked to. Your blog is great, like the gloves you reviewed, got a pair now have been looking for some like that for ages. As for going faster, ask Chicchi.

  • Not sure if this has already been posted but it looks like a good article. quickrelease.tv/?p=327

  • I've done a mini utfs.
I'm just getting some insurance and reading the small print. Seems that the Krpto Evo is an accepted Sold Secure lock, when the Fagh isn't. wtf? I just sold my Evo to get a fagh which is clearly better.
Gutted. Am going to have to buy another lock.

  • The Fahg mini is better, and don't trust the rating system.

  • ^if you use it

yeah, it's thicker, it has to be.
But, it's not covered in the insurance list.
    Daft innit.

  • is a second hand new yoirk covered?

  • is a second hand new yoirk covered?

This was going to be my next question.
You have to provide proof of ownership and I'm sure insurance companies wouldn't accept second hand locks.

  • grrrrrrrrr

  • I'm not saying for defo, but you just know they would try and get out of paying out any which way.

  • Phone the insurance company and ask them why they don't include it. You never know, they may update the list to include it.
