  • hi, dont know if this has already been mentioned on this forum but there is a re-cycle scheme in waltham forest: Low Hall Manor Business centre, South access road e17
you can donate, buy a recycled bike on 1st sat of each month and learn bike repair skills (workshops are fri 10 - 4 or sat 11-3 )
i havent been to buy a bike but they sell em cheap, good for a pub bike

    cheers!

  • Do you know if they are a registered charity.
The company I work for has just removed some abandonned bikes from their garages and will be binning them unless a charity can collect them.

  • There is this one too bikeworks.org.uk/contact-us-map.php in Bow. They are a very helpful not for profit organisation.

Bikeworks has always got lots of old hack bikes, they often build them up as single speeds and sell them on very, very cheap.

Object email Jim there he may well take them off your hands.

  • Been there once. The guys are quite friendly and will let you have a look to all the piles of stuff they have there: it can be a good place to source parts for a pub-bike but don't expect to find any treasures....loads of donated cheap halford-style MTB. No road bikes when I was there, though.
Worth a visit if you live in the area and looking for parts.

  • i spent the best part of 6 mths working down there on fridays 10 - 4 they have sessions on saturday morn / afternoons where you can go in and use the library of tools they have you can fettle your own machines or help out building a bike for the sales i learnt huge amounts during my time there things i had always been to my local bike shop to have done botttom brackets headset removal replacement etc learnt all aspects of bike mechanicing and if i made any mistakes it is on shogun 18 geared 30 quid bikes so it wasn't any big issue ( not that I did make many mistakes !! ) at least it wasn't on the number 1 bike

great place nice people too knowledgable people involved in the local borough riding groups

i would recommend to any one with a spare friday to get over there and help out.

  • Cheers Cas, will see if he responds.

  • i think there are loads of these all over. one in newcastle and sheffield at least.

im going down tomorrow to buy a bike and hopefuly doing some voluntary work over the summer

  • I've started building a register of DIY workshops and bike recycling projects at Cranks' website.
Please PM me if you know of any others not listed. I'm particularly interested in DIY/open workshops.

  • As soon as i'm settled in E17 it's my intention to help out with this walthamforest.gov.uk/inde...ng-recycle.htm

maybe it'll cure my addiction to fettling.

  • I've only heard really good things about bikeworks - i'm gonna check it out one of these days...

15 minutes after I emailed I got a phone call. Looks liek you've just helped me rescue some bikes.

  • They are a great, they help us (Rollapaluza) out no end. If you get a chance get down and have a look there are always a few interesting things, like the old fixed wheel we posted a month ago.
